- The film’s entire shoot took only 22 days or just a little under two weeks.
- In the movie, Napoleon’s older brother Kip plays a 32-year-old who still lives at home while Napoleon still attends high school. In real life, Aaron Ruell (who plays Kip) is only one year older than John Heder (who plays Napoleon).
- Character Summer Wheatley is played by Haylie Duff, older sister to actress and singer Hillary Duff.
- The entire movie was edited in the apartment of producer Jeremy Coon on a Mac using final cut pro, a commonly used video editing software.
- Napoleon’s signature golden locks were far from natural. In order to get his hair to match the vision of his iconic character actor Jon Heder got a perm before filming began.
- Anyone remember how long it took Napoleon to do the shading on Trisha’s upper lip? Jon Heder might be able to tell us! Almost all drawings shown in the film were done by Heder himself.
- Jon Heder helped to make Deb’s famous boondoggle keychains between scenes.
- Jack Black nearly played the role of Rex in the film. Although he didn’t get the role he was later cast in director Jared Hess’s film, Nacho Libre.
- John Heder originally got paid $1,000 to play Napoleon, however, after the film’s wide success his contract was renegotiated.
- The film was featured at the Sundance Movie Festival and as an independent film was made with the low budget of $400,000. Overall, the film grossed well over 44 million worldwide.
