Technology has always played a profound role in society. Teenagers in high school can efficiently print out their lab report by the press of a button, microwave a Hot Pocket breakfast in less than a minute and even wash their hands under a sensitized hand dryer. Innovations like these were created with a purpose to make lives simpler. For cell phones, it was intended to create relationships and spark interaction with one another, yet it did quite the opposite.
Social networking sites are significant distractors in a teenagers life. Imagine coming home after an arduous week of tests, projects and homework. This perfect moment to log onto Facebook and check on what your best friend Stacey is doing over the weekend. This doesn’t seem that much of an issue, but once teens log into the virtual world, they stay in the virtual world. Soon Facebook becomes a necessity rather than an option.
Teenagers succumb to this addiction which leads to many other problems. Instead of logging onto Facebook every week, teenagers log onto Facebook every day, or even every hour, turning away from reality and its beauty.
The beauty of your grandmother’s smile as you tell her about your day. The beauty of the Cherry Blossoms that only blossom in warm weather. The beauty of just directing your attention towards something truly genuine.
