Let's face it--some of the things we spend the most time with in our daily lives are our respective pieces of technology. Especially with the rise of the pandemic, technology has quickly become a thing that both separates us and connects us- possibly even making these things occur simultaneously. Really think about all of the things you view and experience daily, all thanks to technology.
As Bo Burnham said, technology interests us in anything and everything - all of the time. That power that not only we hold, but our devices hold over the world and over all of us can be rather scary.
At the end of the day- what we say, what we do, and what we choose to engage in online says a lot about us and who we are as individuals. I encourage anyone and everyone reading this to really think about what they choose to engage in on a regular basis. Maybe you are choosing to binge shows like the second season of Outer Banks, maybe you choose to scroll aimlessly on Tik Tok or even participate in the latest viral trend, maybe you would rather take to YouTube or post on Instagram about how Britney should be freed (#freeBritney).
At the end of the day, whatever you choose to indulge in, or whatever you do online, you are leaving an impact, big or small, it is still there. And, what would your technology say? After all, it is always watching. Would it be proud of what you are indulging in, or would it judge your choices?
As I was trying to write this article, I felt a bit stuck, and like I did not know direction I wanted to take my writing in. Without hesitation, and without really using my mind, I immediately took to the internet to look up article writing prompts for when you are feeling stuck in your writing. I came across the article idea of thinking about if keyboards could talk, and it made me think about what my keyboard might say about me. Tonight, I think my keyboard would tell me to grow up and write what is really on my mind, instead of striving for unrealistic perfectionism. I think my keyboard would tell me to unload my mind on to the page (or screen) and go for it, never looking back.
My keyboard might be right, I know what I need to say, and I hope you all do too. Remember, you are never truly alone, like it is implied in Black Mirror, the screen is always watching, make it proud.
