10 Things I Would Tell My Younger Self

As we get older, we think about the experiences we've been through and how they have shaped us as people, whether they are big or small. Sometimes we wish we could go back to our younger selves and tell ourselves what to expect, and the outcomes of the experiences we go through. Here are 10 things I would tell my younger self that I know now.

1. You’ll switch schools

This might sound crazy, but it's true. You’ve never been the ‘New Girl’ but get ready, because once high school starts you will be. Although it’ll be really hard at first, don't give up. Keep pushing. It’ll teach you some amazing life lessons, and you’ll meet some incredible people.

2. You’ll make friends

I know you probably don't want to hear this but, your best friend will be your brother. He’ll be the greatest friend you’ll ever have. Don’t worry you’ll make other really good friends that are also your teammates.

3. You’ll find a passion for helping others

I know right now you’re WAY to young to even think about a career, but you’ll end up finding great satisfaction in helping those in need. You’ll even major in a degree at college that will help you to better understand those people.

4. You’ll be insecure

This is normal. Everyone goes through this, but remember that you have family that loves you and will support you in every way possible. You’ll soon learn to love who you are becoming. I know right now it’s hard to picture yourself as confident, but I promise you'll get there.

5. You will lose people you love

Grandpa will pass away. It’ll be a very sad day for you, but the pain will begin to fade, and with all the love and support from your family it’ll become more bearable. Remember that he's always with you.

6. You’ll graduate high school

Right now, school is absolute hell for you. You found out not too long ago that you’re different and learning for you doesn't come as easy as it does for others, but you’ll eventually overcome this immense struggle. You’ll even write a speech about it and give it to your entire high school. No pressure, you’ll do great.

7. You’ll finally get a new dog

After years of not having one, you’ll eventually get a new one. She’ll be the cutest thing you’ve ever seen and become a life-long friend. You’ll miss her a lot when you leave for college.

8. You’ll go to college

You’ll find a place you can call home and feel comfortable there. Although you’ll miss home, being at the college you’re at will make it easier being away. You’ll even be a college athlete.

9. You’ll meet someone

Someone truly amazing that will take your happiness to a whole new level.

10. You’ll become the person you’ve always wanted to be

Even though you're scared of what the future holds and how fast time is moving, just know that you’ll make yourself proud with all the accomplishments you achieve. And remember to always stay true to yourself and never stop working for what you want.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
