A Letter To My Younger Self

I know the going gets tough, but you are tougher.

Hi there. How are you?

Actually, don't answer that… I know that you aren't doing so great. Things seem rough. You feel unwanted, scared, depressed. People pick on you constantly and you feel like giving up. I'm here to tell you that I'm glad you didn't. I know there was never a time you felt like you weren't the target. Because, to you, everyone was trying to make you upset. Those friends you called friends weren't actually as nice to you as you thought they were. To be honest, looking back on it, they were extremely rude and did aim to make your life a living hell.

But while school seemed like it was never going to get better, it did. The people whose opinions meant so much to you then mean nothing now. All that time you spent making sure people liked you was not worth it. They don't matter anymore. In fact, their opinions never really did matter, they only seemed to. It takes a while to notice, but those who put you down are only doing it due to their own insecurities.

Well, here you are today. You made it through the hell of middle school and high school. You graduated high school and now made it to college. Life has gotten a lot better. People have gotten nicer, the drama has lessened, and you have accepted yourself for who you are. Although college is still tough, life isn't as bad as you once thought.

I'm writing this letter to you to express how grateful I am that you continued to power through, no matter how tough things did get. No matter how many times you wanted things to end, you kept strong. I know how close you were to going through with the unthinkable, but I can tell you now, I'm so thankful you didn't. And I know you have so many people to thank for being the reason you are still here.

It was rough, I'll agree. All those endless nights crying yourself to sleep. All the negative thoughts you had. And it may have taken some time to realize how much you mean to the people around you, but now you know. The ones that kept you strong are the ones you need to keep in your life. No matter what happens, they will be there for you.

You are loved, you are worth it, and you are important. Never forget that. I realize it was forgotten time and time again, and at some points even now I forget these things. However, they are true and once remembered, these three phrases can help you power through.

So thank you again. Thank you for keeping yourself going and for trying your hardest. Thank you and remember, it can only get better from here. I believe in you.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
