"What would Jesus do" is a question I grew up hearing. Some people mock the saying, but I find lots of meaning in it.
Many people question whether or not we should ask ourselves "WWJD" because they say that if we do we are setting ourselves up for failure. They think that because Jesus's reaction is perfect, we shouldn't even attempt to respond as he would. Crazy right? To me, it doesn't matter because I am constantly striving to be more like Jesus. Every single day I fail at that, but it's not because I didn't try.
It's because I am human.
In Philippians, Paul writes to the church at Phillipi while he's in jail for spreading the gospel. In Philippians 1, Paul reminds them to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Living in a manner worthy of the gospel is so meaningful. That's asking yourself "WWJD?" in any situation you might be in.
Asking yourself that question can really affect how you live. Even wearing a bracelet that has the letters on it is a constant reminder of how we should live.
The response to that question is that Jesus would love others first.
He already loved us so much that He died a criminals death on the cross, but He also continues to love us each and every day. Every time we turn our backs on Him and do whatever the world is telling us is okay, Jesus doesn't leave us.
Elevation Worship released a song called "Love Won't Give Up," and it's so true. Some of the lyrics are "the cross is all the confidence I need," "lost my way but I'm not forgotten," "nothing I want that your love doesn't offer," and "nothing I've done that your grace won't cover."
Each of those lyrics reminds us of Jesus' love for us. Our response should always be to love first. I mean we are commanded to do that in John 13:34-35.
"WWJD" is a constant reminder that after you make a public declaration of your faith, people look at you and equate how you are acting to other Christians. If you aren't reflecting Christ and a non-Christian is watching you, they are going to think that all Christians act like you are. That could be really detrimental to them coming to know Christ.
Always think before you react or decide to do something that the world is saying is okay.
