A new year can symbolize tons of things. Maybe you find yourself glancing down at your kids in disbelief, wondering how time is going so fast. Maybe you’re someone who needs to start over, and wants to make 2017 the best year yet. Or maybe you find yourself perfectly content, and just happy to start a new year with loved ones. Regardless of what was on your mind when the clock struck twelve, there’s sure to be a few goals you want to accomplish this year. Go to gym more, be more generous, get that promotion you’ve been working so hard for. And like it or not, many of these resolutions you might not make good on. In fact, many you might stop trying to accomplish a month or so after you’ve begun to work towards them. So how can you really be the person you want to be in 2017? Yesterday, while chatting with my mother she gave me a great idea.
My mom said, “I’m choosing a word I want to apply to the year.” At first I was confused by the concept, but then she explained further. My mom’s word is positivity, and throughout the year she’s going to try and remember to be positive in all situations. After we discussed it, I decided that this idea could work better for me then a list of resolutions. So I began to think… what word do I want to live by this year? This was tough, because so many came to mind. This year I want to be… healthy, happy, caring, the list goes on and on.
So after some debating I decided on a word that I thought would best fit me: courageous. I chose this word because I will be graduating in the following year, and will have to venture off into the real word in search of a job. This means I will begin a whole new stage of my life, and I need courage to live in a new place with new people. There’s tons of words that I want to compliment my main word, like grateful, and kind. But, by choosing one word to apply to 2017, I can walk into the year with the right outlook.
After picking my word, I thought others might like to hear the idea. So I took the liberty of writing this little piece. So instead of checking off a list of to-dos, you could focus on being the best version of yourself in another way. So I guess I’m asking, what’s your word for 2017? And how can you use it to change the year for the better? That gives you something good to think about on the first Sunday of the new year.
