Jan Hargrave: What A Woman!
Kase Doner

Seated in the audience of a fairly large tan walled conference hall, I sat tapping my pen on the white tablecloth of the round hotel table; a bit impatient with the way my morning was going. A dysfunctional alarm clock, overpriced coffee and the ever-increasing temperature of the room had me on the slide to flat out irritated.

Unexpectedly in walks a petite woman dressed stylishly in almost all black with neon bright pink glasses and short raven hair. Stopping the tapping of my pen probably to the relief of those at my table. I watched her approach the front of the room, pausing at a table to set down her bag and arrange her things. The speakers that filled the room crackled to life as one of the leaders of the conference began rattling off facts and places and names of some speaker named Jan. Not taking the time to listen I pulled out my phone checking the time until lunch, two more hours.

The woman I had noticed earlier began approaching the stage and that is when my interest perked, who was the woman? She held herself with the pride of success shoulders rolled slightly back. The way she walked was not in a prideful way more of a swagger of self assured confidence in herself. This is when Jan Hargrave began speaking and I became captivated.

Jan is a leading specialist in reading, understanding and predicting Body Language. Born and raised a true blooded Cajun from southwestern Louisiana; she grew up speaking both French and English. Jan a very educated collegiate woman received her Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Specialist degree in Business/Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She's currently the CEO of Jan Hargrave & Associates, a Houston-based consulting firm. She also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston for eight years. Jan maintained a truly brag worthy feat of holding and completing graduate school with a GPA of 3.8. Jan Hargrave everyone what a woman!

Being an avid TED TALK watcher and while young I have been very involved with multiple organizations as well as listened to hundreds of speakers. From competing in public speaking competitions to judging them, and from group presenters and leadership trainers, I can honestly say Jan stands out like an albino alligator in the green Louisiana swamp. I don't want to give away all the tricks she has up her sleeve but some things you can expect to learn from a Jan presentation are that love can be spotted earlier than you think. She knows what you’re thinking by the way your hands are placed and the tilt of your head. Sneaky Jan reads witnesses in a courtroom; she can effectively tell if someone will tell the truth by the placement of their hand when swearing on the bible. She studies the way people face shape, body language, actions, voice inflections while on the witness stand or in the jury and can predict the out come or choices they will make. With her spy like qualities Jan has been hired by some big names to conduct or teach these nonverbal skills. These companies included big wigs like, Merrill Lynch, Starbucks, Rockwell, ESPN, Sun Life Financial Distributors, Exxon, Chase Manhattan Bank, NASA, Bank of America, and the USA MWR Training and Development Center in Heidelberg, Germany.

Want to know how the way you doodle a snake has an effect on your love life come give Jan a chance to tell you. A fiery speaker and inspirer she is definitely a must have for any convention as her skills are applicable across the board. If you can't see her in person you can purchase some of her books titled, Let Me See Your Body Talk, Freeway of Love, Judge The Jury and Strictly Business Body Language. You can find out things even about yourself that you may not realize your body is communicating to others.

Contact Jan through her website at http://www.janhargrave.com/store/ or friend her on Facebook as just Jan Hargrave.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
