The Walt Disney Company is one of the most successful companies worldwide. According to Forbes' The World's Most Valuable Brands, Disney as a corporation is valued at $39.5 billion. What is the reason for the incredible success of Disney? Disney is so easily loved by their consumers. Business experts at Disney do a fantastic job of appealing to everyone in terms of various categories that they have major involvement in, especially their TV entertainment and theme park industries. Essentially, Disney has it all. Throughout the years, Disney has opened seven theme parks and resorts around the world and has made too many movies to count. With the almost endless Disney products, people of all ages can respect and enjoy a company that has a mission for being a symbol of happiness and achieving the impossible.
Another reason why Disney is so exceptional is because they continuously have new products and attractions for their customers. Disney has increasingly been inventing and using new technology to successfully represent their brand. As the year 2016 comes to a close and 2017 begins, Disney has more in store for their committed and loving audience members in their entertainment business and theme parks in what could be one of Disney's biggest years in history. Here are just a handful of the big products that are yet to come.
Theme Parks
On May 27, Disney World's Animal Kingdom in Orlando released its "nighttime experience," which includes various updates to the park including the Tree of Life animation and the after-dark adventures on Kilimanjaro Safari and other rides. In the Tree of Life animation, guests can sporadically view Disney's advanced technology light the trees with an animated, colorful story of an array of animals and their journeys of life. In addition to their new animations, Animal Kingdom's Kilimanjaro Safari is being expanded from its daytime only experience where guests board a rustic safari vehicle and drive through an African-like terrain and view real life animals roaming the land to a new nighttime experience update, where guests will be given night-vision goggles and can view animal life in a whole new perspective. Kids and families can truly feel like they are in Africa rather than in the middle of Florida (with a $70 fee per person for the extended attraction of course).
The final big update to Disney's Animal Kingdom is a new film attraction called "The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic,"based on the new Disney blockbuster "The Jungle Book" being released on May 28. This attraction is a story used with water-based screens above a large lake that tells the story of "The Jungle Book" characters in an interesting way. Disney once again intrigues the audience with a new view on storytelling while incorporating well-loved Disney characters. This is very similar to the Fantasmic! and the World of Colorshows in California's Disneyland except this show is based on a famous Disney movie and it shows the characters come to life rather than simply being a light show.
In Epcot, another park of Disney World, a well-known ride, Soarin',is having its first major update since it was opened. Soarin', or in Disneyland "Soaring Over California," is an attraction that is a sensation overload in which guests are in a virtual hang-glider viewing all the sights, smells and sounds of well-known locations around the United States. As a kid, this was personally my favorite attraction in Disneyland and I am absolutely ecstatic that the "imagineers" (Disney-talk for engineers) have decided to update it. The new update to this famous attraction (opening June 17 of this year) is expanding its horizons to land marks all around the world. Guests will now be able to "travel" to The Great Wall of China and other major places that kids could only dream of going. With this new update, a child's dream, or even a parent's dream, of traveling the world can be fulfilled in five minutes.
However, the most anticipated expansion that is probably also the most extravagant (and expensive) Disney has initiated this decade is dedicated to the "Star Wars" franchise. Starting in April of this year, Disney is designating 14 acres of land in both Disney World and Disneyland for "Star Wars" land. There is no completion date yet due to the immense amount of work and time it will take to build, but supposedly, "Star Wars" land is supposed to be set up as if guests were immersed into the movie, completed with galactic creatures roaming the land in addition to at least two attractions that guests can embark on. However, in order to make room for this massive region, some historic attractions will be closed in California's Disneyland, which to a beloved Disney fan, is painful to see. With all the money that is going into "Star Wars" land in both locations in the United States, people have high expectations and hopefully Disney will not disappoint.
Movies
In the recent months, Disney's film-making companies have released three major movies "The Jungle Book," "Zootopia," and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," that when combined sold more than $1.5 billion at the box offices."The Jungle Book" alone broke records grossing $239.7 billion worldwide in the first week. In the months to come, Disney has a full line-up of major motion pictures that are either sequels to a well-loved Disney movie, or a remake of an old Disney classic.
"Alice Through the Looking Glass"debuted on May 27 of this year and customers are excited to see the new adventure Alice and other characters enter after the 2010 "Alice in Wonderland" based on the original 1951 film. Although nothing will ever be as magical as the original 1951 film, nowadays there are more creative ways to market the film. Using an interactive mirror in California's Disneyland, Johnny Depp was presented as the Mad Hatter and to the park guests' surprise, interacted with them. This marketing technique gave customers a glimpse of the tremendous amount of work and effort that was put into making this movie and the hard work will definitely reflect in the film.
The sequel of the beloved "Finding Nemo," "Finding Dory" will be released in theaters on June 17 of this year and people of all ages couldn't be more excited to follow Dory through yet another journey in the fantastic and colorful waters of the Pacific ocean. Almost $1 billion was collected in box office tickets worldwide for "Finding Nemo" and 13 years later, "Finding Dory" may break records with the amount of tickets sold when it premieres. In addition, a new version of technology that was used to make "Finding Nemo" will be used in the new film to enhance each sensation encompassing the ocean. It was a wise decision by Disney Pixar to create a sequel starring the loving character. "Finding Dory" will be available to view in 3D, which will allow children and other family members to actually feel absorbed into the Pacific following Dory.
On July 1 of this year, a heartwarming story based on a favorite children's book will debut into theaters. "The BGF," or the Big Friendly Giant, written by Roald Dahl is a story about a girl and the progression of her friendship with a giant (who is indeed big and friendly) in his giant world. Roald Dahl, who wrote the book, is also the writer of the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which was made into a movie in 2005 and was hugely successful. In typical Disney fashion, the trailer of "The BFG" did not exactly show what the plot of the movie is, if it is a spin-off the book or if it follows the book directly, instead the trailer is a patchwork of scenes from the movie showing how invigorating the adventure will be to watch. Anyone who has read "The BFG" as a child or who enjoys the gift of friendship would appreciate viewing this inspiring film.
March 17, 2017 will be the premiere date for the remake of one of the most well-known Disney movies in history: "The Beauty and The Beast." The teaser trailer for the film was released about a week ago and fans are raving that Princess Belle will be played by Emma Watson, also known as Hermione Grainger from "Harry Potter." As a major fan of the Disney classic, I don't think the casting director could've picked a better person to fill the shoes of Belle. Her delicate and charming personality will definitely not disappoint. Since the full trailer of the film has not been released yet, there is not much to know about this movie, but hopefully, it will be another successful feature film.
This is far from an extensive list of what Disney is planning to release, update or construct in the next few months. As more and more ideas get tossed around about what Disney should do next for their fans and customers, this corporation will continue to grow and inspire children and adults all around the world into fulfilling their dreams and to believe in things that may seem impossible.
