When in high school there are many teachers and students who tell you what it will be like when you go to college. We, as mere high school students, at that time usually believe what we hear and take it as this is how college will be. Yet, that is not true at all since college is much different than the picture that we had visualized in the back of our minds. Here is what high school did not teach us about college.
1) How To Cite A Paper
In college anything you write that is not in your own words must be cited and have a reference source so it will not be considered plagiarism.
2) Buying Books
Buying books is one thing that tends to drain all the money you have and may not even be used as much as we would expect. We buy these books are a requirement for class and they serve us no purpose after..
3) Writing A Resume
4) Filling Out Fafsa
In order to have financial aid in college you have to qualify for it. This means filling out a long and tedious form with so many miscellaneous details that are not even important.
5) Being Held Accountable For Attendance
It is no secret that professors want you to be in class so they can teach. But, we as students can only miss class up to four times at most and it falls on our shoulders.
6) No Extensions On Assignments
College students get a lot of work and may not finish it on time. Professors do not even reason with you on giving you extra time to finish.
7) Paying For A Transcript
If you ever want a copy of your transcript for any reason whatsoever; you have to pay for it and wait at least one day to pick it up.
8) Finding The Right Major
We may not all know what we want to study coming out of high school and most of us consult with teachers and faculty before entering college. In this case, they may not give you the best response or can lead you to studying something in an opposite direction of what you want to do.
9) Emailing Professors
The best way to reach a professor is to email them; who would have thought?
10) Academic Probation Exists
Colleges can decide if your academics are not up to par and make the decision to dismiss you if you are not performing at a satisfactory level in your classes.
11) Long Breaks Between Classes
Making your own schedule for classes is great. Having a long break between them is not so great. Flexibility is wonderful, but no one wants to be on a college campus all day.
12) Being Involved At All Moments
The more you get involved on a college campus the more people you can meet and find out what is offered by the place you come to take classes and spend so much money to attend.
13) Waiting For Everything
We have to wait for everything in college whether that be needing help with a paper, seeing a professor/ counselor, and picking up necessary papers.
College is a wonderful place for how much it allows you to learn about yourself and grow as a person. Though there are some things we wish we knew before entering and how the journey in front of us will be, it is a wild experience that takes many turns along the way.
