Picture this: after a long, stressful day of classes and work, you arrive home at midnight exhausted. You go to the door, your key ready to unlock it and go inside your apartment. You've barely eaten all day (who has the time?) and can feel your stomach cramping with hunger. What you really need is a meal and a good night's sleep, but being a poor college student you have exactly zero dollars and zero cents in your bank account. As you push the door open you can almost smell the large pepperoni pizza you're craving, and it fills you with a warmth and an unbearable desire. In fact, the smell is, like, REALLY realistic. You turn your head to see your roommates sprawled out on the couch, shoveling three slices of pizza each into their mouths. They see you, and say, "Hey! We knew you'd be starving when you got home so we ordered pizza. We made sure to save some for you. Also, we got your favorite soda."
These moments are when I know I've chosen well when making the roommate decision.
There are many things I'd like my roommates to know, and not all of them are as flowery and happy as thanking them a thousand times over for ordering me pizza (although that's definitely a huge one). But there are other things too; I want them to know that, since we don't pay for water, it's OKAY to remember to flush the toilet when you're done. There's no water we need to preserve here. Or that no matter how quiet you think you sing (since both of you are such amazing singers...and I swear, that's genuine, not sarcastic) that I can almost certainly hear you from my room across the house while I'm trying to sleep. Or that I'm sorry that I have to go through your room when I suddenly have to pee at 3am because this house was built with only one way to the bathroom, and it's through one of your two rooms.
But along with these things there are the things I cannot begin to endlessly thank you guys for. Thank you both for jumping into action when the bat got into our house and I was terrified hiding under a blanket, despite the fact that you guys were scared yourselves. Thank you for staying up late nights with me talking about everything from the live action "Scooby Doo" movies to actual deep discussions about our lives. Thank you for introducing me to a variety of different shows that I'm now addicted to, and thank you for watching some of my favorites with me ("Powerpuff Girls" while eating homemade spaghetti is the BEST). Thank you for never failing to cheer me up with a Chipotle or an ice cream run when I'm feeling down, and for offering to pay no matter how many times I tell you not to. Thank you both for everything, and for making me the luckiest roommate there is.
