Every New Year’s Eve, I find myself thinking of one specific goal that I want to work toward in the New Year. Whether it’s to get into shape, fall in love, make a lot of money, or something of the like, it always seems to be one specific goal I set the second the clock strikes midnight. Don’t get me wrong, the beginning of the New Year is a great time to start something over or start something new. It opens a realm of a brand-new cycle of 365 days to accomplish something.
However, I have found that every time I set a goal for myself, at one point or another, I lose sight of what I wanted when I set the goal in the first place. I get so fixated on one thing that I forget all the little things it may take to achieve that goal. I get so consumed in trying to fulfill a part of my life I think isn’t good enough, or that is missing, and I don’t focus on anything else.
So, this year, I want things to be different.
Instead of setting one goal I want to achieve, my goal this year is to not have one specific goal. I don’t want to focus my year solely around what I should look like, who I should be dating, or what kind of job I should have. Why limit my year?
My goal for 2017 is to do whatever makes me happy in the moment. I want this year to be the year I take control of my life. I want to do what is the best for me, whatever that might mean at a given time. Wherever I end up in February, I may not be there come June. And once June is over, I may be doing something different come September, and that’s okay. I want to experience whatever changes life may bring.
I have looked back on this past year and have realized that, although I have had some of the best memories and best times of my life, I have also always been looking at what is coming next. I don’t want to be looking at what tomorrow is going to bring. I want to live for today. That is my New Year’s Resolution.
If I have learned anything this past year, it is that if you go after what makes you happy, then inevitably, you will achieve all the goals you could ever set for yourself. Don’t look at life like a calendar and your goals as having due dates. Look at life day by day, and your achievements will follow suit in the happiness that you create for yourself.
