Dear 2004 Maddie,
I thought I could fill you in on the life you’re going to have. I also have a little bit of advice. Now, I only know the next 12 and a half years for certain, but nonetheless, here it goes.
You just moved to the small town of Denton in the big state of Texas. Picking which bedroom you want makes it a little better, but I know you miss your extended family, and your room with the ballerina wallpaper. Don’t worry, those birthday candle wishes come true.
It’s a memorable six years down south, and I suggest writing as much as you can about it. The swing set in the backyard, the Sonic down the street, and the famous Snail Rock. Grandparent visits, the soap-making projects, and the 18-hour drive for Christmas break. These events, and dozens of others, will be happy staples of your childhood. Use more of those journals and diaries.
There are four elementary schools and two junior highs in your future. We aren’t shy by any means, little Maddie, but don’t be afraid to make new friends. Some groups weren’t worth the time. I also know that times aren’t the greatest by the time the first middle school hits, but I promise you, high school makes up for it. Just be mindful that it’s only for a little while. It gets better.
Who knew the small town of Millersville in your home state would take care of you in such an amazing way. You come home to Pennsylvania right after your 11th birthday, and go to Penn Manor High School with a stellar theatre program that you get yourself wrapped up into in the best way. Here’s where those years spent playing with Microsoft Word on Mom’s laptop pays off. You’re going to create posters and programs all the time. You will also have some of the best friends here. You find love here.
You're the small town girl with some big city dreams, and the future's waiting the both of us.
My advice to you is to keep writing, reading, and creating. To anyone growing up, keep doing what you love and never give it up. It can change and evolve as you grow, and that’s okay. Just make sure what you’re doing makes you happy.
Remember what it’s like to be five. You’re applying for colleges and scholarships right now. While the next chapter of life is near and exciting, I miss the Disney karaoke concerts you used to perform on your birthday. Have fun and keep strutting your stuff, kid.
Well, little Maddie, if I may say so myself, I’m so proud of us. If there’s one thing I can leave you with, it’s this: your life is rich with memories and blessed beyond belief. I can’t wait for you to see all of it.
With tons of love,
17 year old Maddie
