What Trump Cannot Do

There are things that are more important than the election

What Trump Cannot Do
Pablo Martinez Monsivais

Over the past year, millions of people have engaged in verbal attacks, cyber attacks, and even physical attacks about the election. Well, if you have not heard, spoiler alert, Trump won. This came as a shock to millions, who could not and still cannot imagine Trump as the President of the United States. Even though the future seems bleak for many there are still countless things that Trump cannot do as the President.

  • He cannot help you get an A on that paper you have been stressing over
  • He will not be there when you laugh with your friends over a hilarious joke at 3am
  • He will not help your school’s football team win against its rivals
  • He cannot help you get a job (granted he could make unemployment rise, but that does not stop you personally from working to be the best you can be, so that you are the best option for the job)
  • He will not tear this country apart

What I am trying to say is that there are things that are more meaningful and more valuable than this election. Life is composed of many small moments and it is the little things that people cherish the most when they are old. Politicians come and go. America has seen its share of good and bad presidents, and even if Trump is a bad president, we will get through it, like we have for the past 200 years.

During the next four years, half of the population gets to say that they won while the other will focus on the problems in the country that they claim they did not vote for. Every year this cycle repeats, with presidential elections, senatorial elections, town elections, and even school elections. While the recent results show how one candidate has more support than the other, they also illustrate how deeply divided our country has become. Do not lose friends over the results of the election. It is the diverse friendships of people with different views that truly make this country great, and frankly it seems like they are one of the only things holding this country together at the moment. While Trump’s policies might make it more unsafe for females, homosexuals, and minorities, it is up to the friends of these people and any decent person who is a bystander to make sure that does not happen.

Most of you are probably reading this off of a phone in an air-conditioned house. Although I do not agree with much of what Trump stands for, let’s face it, life could be worse. At the end of the day, you’re not in North Korea.

Trump cannot stop you personally from achieving your goals. It is up to you to have the will to go out and be the best person you can be. No one can take that away from you. Even if you do not believe in Trump’s ideas, it is up to you to stand up for what you believe in and to inspire others to stand up for what they believe in.

Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
