10 Things I Love About Millburn/Short Hills

I didn't think there was anything to miss until I left.

10 Things I Love About Millburn/Short Hills

Although the nicknames of "Sh*t Hills" and "Thrillburn" were created about our towns, they really have so much to offer. I never realized how much I love where I grew up until I got to college. I definitely took it for granted and sometimes, all I wish for is to visit home for a day.

Here are the things on my mind when I'm missing home:

1. Millburn Deli

The deli is known and loved by not only the people in Millburn and Short Hills but people from all over. There is an unlimited amount of options to eat and the line is usually out the door. (That's why you have to call it in, wait in the car for a few and then go right to the counter) There have been numerous instances at college where I am completely craving a Griller #8 or a Godfadda and highly considered getting one shipped to me.

Godfadda- no bacon, extra russian. Everyone in there knows my order when I walk in.

2. The Short Hills Mall

Having one of the most popular malls down the street from you is definitely a major advantage. Some people have to plan a day trip to the mall, but I can get there in minutes if I need an outfit for a party that night or simply for some American Joes bread.

3. Millburn High School

No, I am not saying that I miss waking up at 7:20 every morning and going to the high school. But after leaving, I definitely think that Millburn High School has some of the best staff that have left marks on my life. High School was where I developed into who I am today, and where I made my best friends. I wouldn't change a thing about my high school experience. I miss the traditions like Prom (Post Prom), the house parties where you could hear people speak and not get trampled on, and the class absences that really didn't matter.

4. Having your best friends minutes away

This is a big one. I've had my besties since middle school and being away from them for this long makes you realize how much you really need them. (Especially being a plane ride away). It's so important to spend the most time you can with them, forget the drama, and make memories to last forever.

5. Senior year

Although first semester is full of common app and working hard to keep your GPA up, senior year is one for the books. You finally get through the rough parts of high school and it's the time to celebrate. Senior year was when my grade became closest. The car decorating contest (that we won, go fluffle!) was one of the best times and Senior Lunch was the best part of every day. Graduation was sad but the cruise and parties that week were done right, and we left with a bang.

6. Sports

I know we weren't the best at every sport. But that doesn't change how sports were prioritized and the feeling of being on a Millburn team. I've had some great coaches who influenced me as a player and as a person who make me wish I could go back. The sports I played had talented girls on the teams and I am so grateful to have played and developed friendships with them.

7. Magic Fountain

MF was almost a routine when it was nice out. (Even though I've waited on that line when it was 50 degrees out). Yeah, I can get soft serve in the dining hall every night, but that can't compare to a vanilla magic blend with Oreos and Kitkat in it.

8. Goldbergs (Bagel Chateau)

I had no idea that I would be deprived of good bagels when I left for school. I went to Chat at least twice a week, whether for breakfast or lunch. Saturday and Sunday mornings at Chat are a must. You will most likely see all your friends there in pajamas, laughing about the night before.

9. Friday night Football games

I guess you could call it a tradition of High school. Win or lose, we were all there cheering under the lights. It's definitely not like a college game (or a UMiami tailgate) but it is what made up our years as growing teenagers making memories.

10. Home

I miss my family and my Sunday dinners beyond belief. It is hard not seeing your little sisters' faces every day and not being able to watch them grow. I never thought I would miss my bathroom shower so much. I have to say my dorm room Twin XL is pretty comfortable but nothing can compare to my bed at home. Nothing beats the silence of my bedroom or the privilege to use a stove and oven. (All I want is to make something and there is no stove in my building)

I bet most college kids will agree with this and for those of you still in Thrillburn, take advantage of the time you have left. Make your time there worth it and one to miss.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
