Congratulations! You just got hired as a barista! Or, maybe you are thinking about applying to be a barista. Being a barista can be lots of fun and a very rewarding job, but nobody is the perfect barista in the first week of work!
I just got hired at Starbucks and the first couple days have been rough not going to lie. I am going to go day by day and write about my experience and what I learned each day of work.
Day one: this day you will do everything there is to do except be a barista
They do not just throw you onto the bar as you can imagine. The first day, you are in the back watching a ton of training videos. The way Starbucks has it is you do one section of online training and then you go onto the floor to meet your trainer and practice. My first day, we practice barista support and I was introduced to the P.O.S. system. Barista support is an important job and basically makes the lives of everyone else easier! You are brewing coffee, cleaning dishes, going into the dining and tidying things up, restocking etc. I learned how to be barista support and then I was introduced to the P.O.S. The Starbucks P.O.S system (point of sales) takes a lot of training to get used to and become a master. I have been working there for maybe two weeks and I am still not a master at it and I still get confused and lost as to where things are. Let me tell you, use the "I'm new" card for as LONG as you can! It will save your life.
Day two:
This day you will learn about the basics of the bar. You will watch training videos and learn how to steam milk, pull espresso shots, make drinks, make teas, refreshers, basically, you will be introduced to everything. This day was fun because you get to practice everything and you get to try stuff too! You will learn a lot of numbers, but you do not have to memorize them all that day. It will take some time and getting used to before they put you our there by yourself to be a barista.
Day three: This day, you will get to practice making drinks and learn about beverage sequence. In a nutshell, beverage sequencing is multitasking and being able to make two drinks at once. You will get to practice taking orders and making customers drinks. This is a day of practice.
Day four: (if you make it this far)
Day four is drive-thru day. You will learn how to sequence the drive-thru. You will learn about the headsets and you will become better at connecting with people. I listened in on the drive-thru headset, and then I got to practice.
Starbucks is a great company to work for, and if you are thinking about applying, I would say do it! If you don't like being a barista, you can quit but I think you might love it! Starbucks is full of fun and outgoing energetic co-workers that will become your best friend! You will start to talk about weird topics of conversation over the headset to each other across the store like the moon landing and colonoscopies. So far, I have really enjoyed working at Starbucks and I was hesitant to apply, but I did and I landed the job and I couldn't have found a better one!
This article is not affiliated with the Starbucks company, but it based on personal opinion.
