I've decided to dedicate this summer to adventure. That being said, I've done some things these past few months that people would never even think of doing. Of those things sky diving seems to be the most terrifying to people. Maybe if I lay out what to expect when you jump out of a plane, it will encourage more people to get out there and try it! I promise it is one of the most amazing experiences you will ever have.
When you first get to the venue that you have trusted your life to, you will sign some waivers and watch some videos so that they are sure you know that if you die, it isn't their fault. Then they will put a harness on you that is rather invasive. They will go through the positions you will put your body in when you jump and when you land and then you're being rushed onto a very small plane.
The plane is very small and has two long benches where you sit with your legs on either side of the bench. You are back to chest with all the other people who are jumping and your tandem jumper begins to clip you on to him or her in various places. They will open the door to the plane and this is the part where your heart starts to race. You can see way out into the blue sky and you know that momentarily you'll be thrown out into the blue abyss with out the protection of the plane.
The people in front of you start casually falling out of the plane and before you know it your feet are hanging off the edge and you're looking down on little sguare fields. "3, 2, 1..." says your tandem jumper and you're all the sudden freezing and unable to breathe. The air is rushing into your mouth and nose and the cold is penetrating your skin and you can feel your heartbeat in your ears. Your head begins to rush with lack of oxygen but the adrenaline pumps so hard you think your chest might explode.
All of the sudden your body jolts like you've been slammed into a wall when the parachute deploys. For the first time you can enjoy the sight of the clear blue sky all around you. After you catch your breath you begin to calm down and relax. If you're lucky your tandem jumper will hand you the parachute handles and allow you to steer around the sky. Before you know it you're safely back on the ground after a pretty quick and rough landing and the excitement has drawn to an end.
All together, it was the best experience of my life and I encourage every one to try it! Hopefully by reading this you will know what to expect and maybe it will relax your fears!
