Even if you are a suburb driver, it is still possible to get pulled over, as I learned today. Some people get very frustrated, some get upset and some even get so scared, they cry. Getting pulled over is a big deal, but how you act and present yourself when the police officer gets to your window is what really matters. Here are some things to keep in mind when you get pulled over.
1. Keep Your Emotions Low
Don’t get over- worked. The police officer pulling you over is a human too. Chances are, you are doing something that is breaking the law. Even though you may not know that particular law, it still can be legitimate. He or she is just doing their job to keep you safe. Although sometimes crying works, it is better to show that you are a confident driver.
2. When you are reaching in your glovebox or center console, tell the officer.
Reaching into a glove box, or center console without making it known, is a big no-no. If you jump to getting your license, registration and proof of insurance before the police officer even walks up to your car can make it look like you are reaching for a gun or other weapon. This can cause a big eruption of events. This can get you into more trouble than you even bargained for.
3. When pulling over, try to be cautious with a less-trafficked area.
This is just common courtesy.
4. Where respect is given, it is earned.
When you act ignorant and better than someone, it ends badly. Always end the incident with a thank you and try to mention that you are thankful for their service.
As I learned from my experience, you can get pulled over for things that aren’t necessarily (in my opinion), but it is always beneficial to stay confident, calm and collected.
