What To Do When You Can't Sleep

Because insomnia can be productive.

What To Do When You Can't Sleep

So your sleep schedule is all messed up, and you know you are in for a long night. Or your body just hates you and decides that it is never the time to sleep. For whatever reason you are awake, and you need something to do, here are a few things you can do when insomnia kicks in.

1.Homework

Got some homework you put off or homework that isn't due for a while? Do it. Do any homework. Maybe it is just me, but I'm way more efficient when I can't sleep, and it is the dead of night. It is also one of the few times where I'm ahead on my work and that never hurts.

2. Project

Have a project you should be starting on? Well, start it now. Troll your library catalog for an hour or get deep into that internet search. If it's a group project, I'm sure your partners will enjoy the fruits of your insomnia.

3.Netflix

Watch a bunch of movies or dive into that one series you have meant to start for a month. While it isn't as productive as the earlier two entries maybe what you need to relax is a good long Netflix binge.

4. Read

I guess you can read for class, but I was thinking of reading that one book for pleasure you've had on your shelf for half a year, but kept putting off because it just hurts to read anything past your required texts. Just read that poor book, it's been waiting patiently.

5. Write

Write something for pleasure or just laughs. You never know you might get something salvageable out of it. I find I write weird, interesting poems when I'm a little crazy from lack of sleep.

6. Color/Draw

I like to color in coloring books when I'm in class, or I can't sleep. If you actually can draw you can make something a bit more artistic. I know I'll be sticking to my adult coloring books, and still making mistakes on those.

7.Games

Play a game, which ever game you like depending on your preferences! Anything from solitaire to Pokemon! Maybe you have a game in your backlog you've been dying to start. Now is the time.

8. Find a buddy

If you have a friend who also can't sleep or maybe is in another time zone get together (be in it real life or virtually) and do whatever you want! Talk about politics or maybe how cute baby ducks are. Anything to pass the time. Be warned, conversations, when you are both tired, can get real weird real fast but isn't that the best part?

9. Write Your Article

You are terrible and put off writing your Odyssey article every week so why not do it at 2 AM on a Friday? I'm not doing anything else of importance, and I can use insomnia as a topic to write about. (Not like I could think of anything better.)

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
