What To Do When There's Nothing To Do

A guide to beating boring days

What To Do When There's Nothing To Do

You know those days where you just don't want to do anything? You're in a mood and don't want to move. Everyone has those days.

Well I am proposing a way to conquer these days.

Here is a list of things you could do instead to improve your mood and boost your productivity.

Hang out with Friends

If you are bored and have nothing to do, go hang out with some friends. Chances are they're doing something and it will serve as entertainment for you. And if not, then be bored together, it's better than being bored alone.

Talk to Family

Even though sometimes it's a hassle, it always makes me feel better when I talk to my family. My siblings always make me laugh and my parents can offer some type of advice for my current situation.

Read a Book

Maybe this is just me, but I love reading. It's a very soothing hobby to have. There's no better feeling than getting really into a book and not being able to put it down. Reading serves as kind of an escape for a little while.

Do Schoolwork

This is no ones favorite thing to do, but it's productive and will help you in the long run. Get ahead on your work so you don't have to later.

Clean/Organize Something

This sounds kind of weird but it is actually very uplifting. Organizing your desk or your closet or cleaning your room or your bathroom helps you feel more organized as a person. I feel like my life is a little bit more together when everything around me is clean and organized.

Get Dressed Up

My sister and I sometimes have fashion shows when we are bored. What better way to make yourself feel better then to make yourself look better. It is always fun to put on your best clothes, do your hair, and just have some innocent fun with friends or family.

Shop

This may not be for everyone, but most people can get something good out of this. If you have the means, go on a shopping spree. Redo your wardrobe because why not? Or, if you're a broke college student (like myself) just go to the dollar store and buy a bunch of weird inexpensive things and go wild.

Workout

A lot of times, when you are sluggish and bored, the last thing you want to do is go to the gym, but it is almost always a good idea. Working out always improves my mood and it's good for you! It's also a great stress reliever.

Take a Walk

Sometimes you just need a little change of scenery to put things in perspective. Go outside and wander around for 20 minutes, it usually helps clear the mind and improve moods.

Whenever you're feeling stuck or stressed or even just bored, don't just sit around and do nothing. Get out of bed and do something, it'll improve your mood and help you feel better.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
