For as long as I can remember, I have always been a very driven and independent individual.

I believe that nature can be attributed to growing up as an only child and from the constant pressure that I put on myself. I have high standards and expectations for almost everything that I do, but in reality, life isn't always that simple. Being driven and determined is only part of being successful in life. The other half is what I believe to be a mixture of sheer destiny and luck.

I cannot always achieve the goals that I set my mind to, and I cannot always maintain the relationships I wish to keep. I have quickly learned that things will happen at the least expected moments. There are many times where you have to expect the unexpected, but one can never prepare for such a thing. So when life doesn't give you lemons, you have to take a deep breath. It's bound to happen to everyone at some point during their life.

Until we walk down a certain path, we don't know what great opportunities can come our way when the first door closes. Life defies logic and emotion in every way possible, but our experiences also shape us into the people we become. The pain and the sadness we feel transform to make us stronger individuals.

We can plan as much as we want, but that doesn't mean our plan will always be set in motion. Life is about how we handle "Plan B" because you can control your attitude and how you deal with a situation. The power is in your hands and just because something doesn't happen for you now doesn't mean that it never will.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.

Some universities only get two or three days off for Thanksgiving break. Or, if your university is like mine, you get the whole week off go go home. A whole week off is a long time. I'm not complaining, because I'd rather have a whole week off than three days, but there is a lot of down time. Here are some ideas as to what you can do to get the most out of your Thanksgiving break.
