This is the time of the year where college students all across the country are coming home for summer break. After completing my first year of college and having to come home for three months, I have learned that my hometown seems to be more boring than ever. Transitioning from the college lifestyle to home life is very challenging. I went form taking care of myself and having a busy schedule to staring at my ceiling wishing I was back at school with all of my friends. I promised that I would make this summer a memorable one with my friends from back home, but now that I am actually back on my old stomping grounds I am not quite sure how that will be accomplished.
I know that it is still very early on into the summer season, but after being home for about two weeks I am already thinking about leaving. Between the bad weather and limited options, my friends and I are constantly thinking of things to do. As for those who do not know, I live on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. On "The Shore", the most entertaining things to do include either going to the beach or going to the local Wal-Mart for many. Don't get me wrong, I have grown to love this place, but The Shore is definitely not an area where teenagers would love to be.
After putting some much needed thought into possible ideas, I have realized that we may not have malls or amusement parks but we do have nature and a lot of neat places to visit and explore. All this time I was looking for entertainment and fun in the wrong places. For these next couple of months I am going to cherish the time that I have with my friends here and also enjoy all of the different aspects that the Eastern Shore of Virginia has to offer.
Some of the things I plan on doing to enjoy my time include simply going to the beach especially considering they definitely don't have that in the mountains. I also would love to go on the trails that are in the local Kiptopeke State Park. Not only is an abundance of nature present for us to enjoy, but also there are a ton of independently owned shops and businsses located all up and down The Shore. Most importantly, the summer time is meant for spending time and catching up with family and friends.
Whether it includes tanning on the beach, sight seeing, shopping at local businesses, or just driving around talking about life, I am going to make sure my friends and I have the best time before we leave for our next semester at school. In these next couple of months it is safe to say many memories will be made.
