Hue was, until 1945, the imperial capital of the country, until the reign of the Nguyen dynasty, the last imperial family that ruled Vietnam, came to an end.

Today, Hue has a population of 344,581 inhabitants. It is a city that, above all, stands out for its historical architectural legacy, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. During the Vietnam War many of the historic buildings of Hue were destroyed or damaged, but today they have still preserved a good part of them and they are, without a doubt, the main points of interest of the city.

Things to do in Hue

When to say things to do in Hue Vietnam there are all kinds of activities, whatever your preferences when traveling. From routes to get to know the most rural part of the area, to courses for the most gourmets who want to know in depth the authentic Vietnamese food. Here we explain what to do in your visit to Hue:

Tour the surroundings of the city by bike

If you want to get away from the more urban part of Hue, a good alternative is to take a bicycle tour around it. Some hotels offer free bicycles to their guests and if not, we recommend renting a bike so you can move around Hue quietly. If you fancy some of the organized routes include a guide. Some of the companies that offer bike tours through the surroundings of Hue are Adventure Discovery Tours or Hue Biking Tour.

A few kilometers away you will discover villages and also one of the most iconic images of the country: rice terraces. Extensive extensions of green color to lose and enjoy in nature. Touring the city of Hue by bike can be a bit more complicated since it is full of motorcycles circulating.

Vietnamese cooking classes

Do you want to know the Vietnamese cuisine thoroughly? Lately, Asian cuisine has become fashionable, and Vietnam's is no exception. So nothing better than attending Vietnamese cooking classes in Hue, where you will learn authentic country recipes from locals.

Strolling through the Dong Ba market

The Dong Ba market is on Tran Hung Dao Street, in the north of the Perfume River because of its passage through Hue. It is a bustling Mercado in which you can discover a host of local products, especially agricultural, and where you can also buy the typical conical Vietnamese hat or all kinds of spices or textiles.

The market opens every day from 6:00 in the morning to 22:00 at night. Around it, there are several restaurants or food stalls in case you want to dine or eat at the place. Another recommendation to take into account is that it is a market in which it is usual to bargain prices, so keep this in mind when purchasing any product. I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.

Thanksgiving Break is most likely everyone’s favorite break during the fall semester. You get to go home and reminisce with all your high school friends. That diet you’ve been on for the past month goes out the window, and you get to eat until you put yourself into a food coma. There’s no rush on homework and you can just lie in bed and Netflix to your heart’s content. To me that sounds like an ideally wonderful break, and totally stress-free.
