When I moved to Orlando, I was a participant in the Disney College Program. Since I've worked for Disney ever since then, of course I love taking advantage of my park admission perks. I also bought a Universal annual pass last year.
As much as I love the theme parks, lately I've been exploring the other riches Florida has to offer. Besides, in summer temperatures soar into the triple digits and a sunburn is inevitable, even with SPF 70. Trekking around Epcot under the blazing sun is no longer my idea of fun.
Whether you live in the Orlando area or you're just visiting, I strongly recommend checking out these other areas -- Mickey will understand!
Clearwater
The town and beach of Clearwater is located about an hour from Orlando. Obviously the beach is an option, but there is also the aquarium made famous by the movie, "A Dolphin Tale" starring Winter the dolphin. There are numerous places to eat; try Clear Sky Cafe for an amazing brunch or the Beachcomber for a more upscale land and sea dinner experience. Around sunset, visit Jimmy's Crows Neck bar, located on the roof of a hotel overlooking the beach on one side and the marina on the other. They have amazing frozen tropical drinks -- and a free shot for all at sunset!
Naples
I thought the beach in south Florida was beautiful until I saw the gorgeous water in Naples. Yes, it's a three hour drive, but it's well worth it. While you're there, grab a margarita and an unconventional bite to eat at Tacos & Tequila Cantina. My favorite is the po' boy shrimp taco!
St. Augustine
Known as being America's oldest city, St. Augustine is full of treasures such as the historic lighthouse and Castillo de San Marcos -- it's enough to send any history buff to heaven. Did I mention the antique shops are amazing?
While I still love my full days at Magic Kingdom and celebrating Hufflepuff pride at Universal, I'm glad I've branched out to see more of what "the sunshine state" has to offer. Happy exploring!
