What To Do When You're In Cheney

Cheney, Washington is 4.1 square miles. In it sits a little college campus with the motto "Start something big." We Eagles love our little town, and you'll learn to love it to.

Go to a football game at The Inferno

Eastern is known for its football program. With 24 conference titles, a 2010 National Championship, and players going into the NFL, the team is exciting to watch on the bright red field! Bundle up in the winter months, the Inferno can get a little chilly.

Or catch a basketball game at Reese Court to watch the team that made the NCAA tournament last season.

EWU men's basketball won a huge upset game against Indiana last season, clinched the Big Sky Championship, made it to the first round of the tournament, while starter Tyler Harvey was drafted to the Orlando Magic.

Go for a hike at one of the many trails around Cheney.

Turnbull Wildlife Refuge, Fish Lake, and Columbia Plateau Trail, just to name a few!

When the weather warms up, the lakes fill with floaties and sunbathers.

If you get hungry, stop by any of the local restaurants located within walking distance from campus.

Rokko's has great teriyaki and fried rice. The Mason Jar has yummy coffee and bistro-style meals. El Rodeo has big burritos and even bigger fish bowl margaritas. And the shining gem of all our late night munchies, Zips, has the greasy burgers and sweet treats to satisfy the little kid in all of us.

Go for a drive on the backgrounds through the rolling hills.

Break free from the library and sit and watch the sun set over the hills behind the football fields.

Go to a concert.

EWU puts on a concert at no charge for students, and the latest performers have been Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Andy Grammar.

Learn something.

EWU hosts the largest undergraduate research conference in the nation. Students from across the world come to our little town to present their findings to judges.

Go ghost hunting.

Cheney is home to many old buildings with creepy backstories. Showalter Hall is said to have a ghost (a horror movie was even filmed in it) and ghost hunters have gone underground to investigate any paranormal activity. The "Dryden Demon" can be seen at night when the outside the residence hall when lights are turned on.

The little town of Cheney can seem boring at first, but find a few friends and go explore! And, if all else fails, you can go to Spokane, which is just a 15 minute drive away.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
