What To Bring And NOT To Bring To College

There are plenty of elaborate lists that you can find online that provide you with all of the things that you will need to bring when moving into your college dorm room as a freshman, but this isn't one of those. This is a list of items that I have found to be crucial in my first year of college, and others that are just plain unnecessary.

Please keep in mind that everyone is different, and we all have our own things that we find important to use on an every day basis. However, this is a simple and effective list that I wish I had before move-in day my freshman year.

What to bring:

1. Wrinkle releaser spray

Because who actually uses an iron?

2. Paper towels, and lots of them

You never know when you might spill a drink in your room, or need to wipe your hands after your weekly Domino's pizza binge.

3. Felt hangers

4. Post-it notes

Sometimes even your planner won't have enough room for your list of to-dos.

5. A deck of cards

6. An extra set of sheets

7. Duct tape

How else are you supposed to fix things?

8. Batteries

9. A couple of formal outfits/heels

You might be spontaneously invited to a formal three hours before it starts or just crashing one with your friends.

10. Lint roller

11. Small vacuum/broom

12. Rain gear (umbrella, rain boots, rain coat)

13. Band-aids

Because if you're anything like me, you're as clumsy as they come.

14. Office supplies (scissors, stapler)

15. Small speaker

Best to have when hosting pre-games in your room.

16. Rug

What NOT to bring:

1. Excessive decor

2. Fancy dishes

Paper/plastic utensils and dishes are the easiest to deal with.

3. Pajama sets

PJ's are the best, but keep them at home. A big T and sweatpants will suffice for most nights.

4. Printer

Most dorm buildings have them, and they take up unnecessary space.

5. Off-season clothes

6. Coffee cups/Tumblers

Just bring one travel cup for on-the-go.

7. DVD's

8. Your entire book collection

9. Duplicates

If your roomie is bringing it, you don't need to bring it.

10. Bulk food

You won't eat it all. Only buy what you know you'll eat, and steal food from the dining hall and you should be fine.

11. A boyfriend/girlfriend

This is one of the most important times of your life to find your own identity. You don't need a relationship to hold you back from trying new things and experiencing this new part of life.

So there you have it! Hope this was helpful for all of you incoming freshman, and will relieve some of your stress during move-in day!

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
