Advice From A Girl Who Has Already Been There and Done That

1.) The Freshman 15

It is no myth. It is not legend. Unlike Big Foot, this phenomena does exist…and it’s lethal. Ramen Noodles are good, am I right? Yes. They are easy to make and it’s a quick and cheap snack to heat up in the microwave before you rush to class. However, it is NOT easy to get rid of the weight you gain from it. Say hello to the Freshman 15. You two will be well acquainted by the end of the year if you keep up the junk food.

2.) The Boy Who Comes On Too Strong

Plop. A Facebook message pops up out of nowhere with the face of an attractive guy, in the same year as you, on your screen. He says “hi” with that animated smiley face. It’s a Trap!!! He was the hook and I was the fish. There was a date; if you can call a dark movie theater where he tried to grope me every five seconds a date. He then makes you feel special for three days after and when you aren’t moving as quickly on the physical level as he is, he gets mad.

Cut ties. Get a restraining order or something. Whatever you have to do to get away from him because he’s crazy. Any man that gets mad at you for not putting out and rushing you to have sex is not a man at all.

If only there was a way to warn other girls of this predator. Then I wouldn’t have had to watch pictures float on social media of the two going on the exact same date he took me on.

When more than two girls rejected his eagerness to have sex, his response to us on Twitter: “I hate goody two shoes.”

Our goody two shoes are walking away now. Bye.

3.) Ditches Are B*tches

Your first college party. So many things are running through your mind. You don’t know anyone and meeting new people is exciting and terrifying. You go with the girls on your floor because they’re friends, right? You eventually figure out who are your real and fake friends and it's nights like these that reveal everything. It’s a black light party, 200 people are crammed into a dilapidated house and the music is so loud you can barely hear your own thoughts. You try to hold onto the one girl you think is your first friend at college, she lives on your floor after all. She shakes you off and you are left stranded in the middle of an ocean full of sweaty bodies. You push and try to get out of the crowd and when you finally do, the girl is gone. You’re alone in a strange place with no friendly and recognizable faces. This girl is a bitch because she ditched. One move like this is enough to know that you don’t need someone like this looking out for you at parties.

4.) Your Dorm Room

Even though you have a pretty good idea of who you are, your dorm room doesn’t allow you to be sure and explore other options. Yes, it’s your home for ten months out of the year but it’s not healthy to stay in there all the time. A dorm room can’t tell you if you’re born to be the next Mozart, or if you’re supposed to be the next President of the United States, or the next C.E.O of a major corporation. You’ll never find out unless you join debate club or student senate or join the a capella group on campus or music club or business club. The possibilities are endless and all it takes is going out into the world and figuring out what you like. You’ll know when you find your passion when your eyes light up and you won’t be able to stop talking your roommate’s ear off while her earbuds are in. The nodding of her head is her just jamming out to music but it’s enough for you to keep blabbing on and on about your passion.

5.) Conformity

You’re pretty awesome just the way you are. I know for a fact that you don’t need to be anything other than who you are because you will find your people. Freshman year is full of people trying to make thousands of friends, fake or real, and defining themselves in a way that doesn’t show off how incredible they actually are because they’re too busy trying to impress another person. You will find your friends but more importantly you'll find yourself!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
