What I Think About When I Mow The Lawn

Watch out for Mom’s flowers!

What I Think About When I Mow The Lawn
Stocksnap

One Summer chore that almost every teenager and young adult, or any adult for that matter, can agree on to be a sweat breaker and water drainer is mowing the lawn.

Younger folk may mow their neighbors’ lawn to earn an extra buck or two during the summer or mow their own lawn because it comes in the parents-child household agreement. When the more experienced folk mow their lawn, they know their routes, they know how their mower works, and they just want to get it done and over with. There are those, believe it or not, who use this as a legitimate pastime to unwind. With the beats in their ears and a skip in their step, they unwind as they trim their yards.

But what do people actually think about when they cut the grass. Regardless of why we do it, what do we think of when we embellish the outside of our homes?

For me, there are many random thoughts that travel in and out of my mind. I’ve always ridden the tractor mower and I just recently started using the push mower because I didn’t have the strength to pull the starter chord quick enough. Anyway, the lawn is usually mowed on a day with nice weather and my mind cannot be released from its grasp.

“Wow, it’s actually a really nice day today. I should ask my friend if she wants to WATCH OUT FOR MOM’S FLOWERS!”, as I jerk the tractor wheel to the right and swerve almost hitting a tree. “That was a close one.”

Another thought that jolts my head straight up is if I closed the door to the house. “If I did, did I leave it unlocked so I can get back in? I could always bring a key outside next time, but if I could have, would I remember?”

Watching the little sand mounts parallel to the grass blades pass by as I ride by, I ask myself, “If I were an ant, how could I ever survive that retched roar of that rolling monster up above? Why would I be asking that question if I was run over by it anyway?”

For the past month or so I’ve been experiencing major drowsiness at random times of day and after I recently visited the clinic, I found out my Vitamin D levels were quite low. So since I’m outside, I ask, “If my Vitamin D levels are so low, why doesn’t the sun’s rays that lay on my skin help them rise to normal? I’ve been told it doesn’t work that way and I believe them because I’m sure not a doctor or a nutritionist, but it kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?

“I can’t believe I missed Hot Topic’s 50 percent off sale the other day.” I’m a huge fan. And of Claire’s, too.

Like many fan girls, I always like keeping up with my favorite male celebrities and also the ones who I really admire, based on who they are as a person and by their amazing gifts they share with the world. “Can you believe that Emma Watson is 27? I bet you that she is never going to age. Wow, I was six when the first Harry Potter film was released. I’d love to meet her some day. That’d be wicked.”

Of course depending on the day I get to mow the lawn the thoughts vary, but they definitely help pass the time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
