e·qual·i·ty
noun
the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
"an organization aiming to promote racial equality"
synonyms: fairness, equal rights, equal opportunities, justice
ex. "we promote equality for women"
Equality is the word that seems to be taking over news headlines all over the country these days. For many it is their goal to see the world living in harmony with everyone being "equal" and then life will be fair. But reality is equality will never exist. Equality can not exist. The idea of it, is irrational. Why? Well, obviously everyone is unique. Individuals think differently, form their own opinions, were taught differently, hold different morals and values, and have different talents. We cannot choose the family we were born into, our race, nationality, upbringing, or if we have a disease, medical conditions, deformities, or mental illnesses.
u·nique
adjective
being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else.
"the situation was unique in modern politics"
synonyms: distinctive, distinct, individual, special, idiosyncratic; single, sole, lone, unrepeated, unrepeatable, solitary, exclusive, rare, uncommon, unusual, informal,one-off, one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime, one-shot
The definitions of these two words alone, can be used to explain why equality cannot exist. If equality were to exist, this is what the world would look like.
There would be no hierarchy.
We call this socialism. And if you look into how socialism has worked in the past, you will see that it doesn't. In order for a country or even a business to run properly, there has to be a leader of some sort. Someone to call the final shots. A leader or a group of leaders. People who are looked to for direction.
Everyone would take equal pay.
Equal pay for everyone. How Stuff Works did a great article on this and I encourage you to read more.
"Recent studies have found that a two-income, two-child family has to make at least $72,000 a year to feel economically secure — that's for basic necessities not including buying a house, investing or taking vacations [source:Gardner]. In 2015, though, the median household income in the U.S. was about $50,000 [source:Vo]. If we offered a minimum salary of $60,000 a year to everyone who worked, we'd be guaranteeing that more than half of the United States would be making more money than they were before."
"Of course, a universal maximum wage is really only workable if people, you know, work. But with great social programs and a guaranteed income not tied to performance, the only people who would come to work every day would be those who loved their jobs so much they'd do them for free. Otherwise, what's a good reason to work? Why not call in sick over and over? Without financial incentive, we'd have to find some other way to keep people in line. Shirkers would have to be fined, publicly shamed or imprisoned."
Culture would be diminished.
Cultures, values, and beliefs are what make people unique. With true equality, culture could not continue to exist.
Family would not have structure.
Parents would be laissez-faire, children will run wild. Children have equal say as adults. Punishment would be nonexistent, as it is unfair.
Equality is unachievable and we need to stop trying to force society to become equal. Instead of giving children participation ribbons and teaching them that rewards come easy, we should teach them how to fail and then be inspired to try again. Instead of complaining about how much other people make doing a different job, with different expectations, focus on how to improve yourself. Accept that life is not fair. Accept that no one chooses their parents and where they were raised, and it's ridiculous to stereotype people based off of their social class, race, age, etc... Make the best of every situation.
