What The Trump

It says a lot about our nation's "strict" rape punishments when we allow a rapist to run for president.

Between the mass media coverage of political controversy between the two candidates, a huge mystery lies behind Donald Trump, stemmed from an allegation from a woman he raped back in 1994. Apparently, Joe Epstein was known for having “sex parties” in which dozens of underage girls were assaulted. Cases against him appeared in court since the 90’s, yet Epstein pleaded guilty in only one case (http://www.nydailynews.com/).

So was Trump really involved?

Well apparently it doesn’t matter to the public considering he’s still a legitimate presidential candidate. Now, I don’t want to accuse him of something he didn’t do, but various studies agree that only 2% to 8% of rape allegations are false; the same percentage for any other false crime accusations, including murder. Personally, I wouldn’t trust Brock Turner or Bill Cosby running our country and making legal decisions about women’s rights, but what would I, a woman, know about what a man thought about what a woman should be capable of doing? I mean, we’ve only let men control women’s rights since the beginning of the country, so why stop them now, right? Men like Trump should totally make decisions for me, ESPECIALLY when someone like himself may be completely capable of deciding when no means yes. I thought no always meant no, but alas I'm no rapist. I mean, there are some amazing political leaders who are pro-women’s rights, but I’m not one to vote for someone who wants to restrict my reproductive rights when he makes decisions about assaulting women, regardless of when it may have happened.

It’s bewildering to think that people can just hide the fact Trump has been accused of rape. Epstein was actually convicted for sexual assault and is now registered as an offender. Mind you, this is a man who Trump claimed was a “terrific guy.” Now I don’t know about your ideologies, but I don’t think Brock Turner is a terrific guy. Sure, their names are different and the cases had their own evidence, but the same crime was committed by both men. Rape is often seen as a horrible crime, yet the punishments seem sub-par. The mass amount of people on social media seem to be upset about the leniency given to the accused, yet Trump still remains a valid candidate.

I’ve done a lot of research on rape statistics in the past couple years due to my own experiences, and let me tell you this: we have some mighty strict punishments for accused rapists! I mean the University of Virginia reported 205 sexual assault cases between 1998 and 2013 and a whopping ZERO PERCENT of people were expelled! Talk about harsh. Only 183 people were expelled for cheating between that same time period, so expelling no one for raping another student? MEAN. Like Taylor Swift might have a top-charts single about how rude the school is to have punished rapists like that. And if you think that’s so bad, other schools make rapists create educational posters about “approaching someone you like,” after they’re convicted (The Hunting Ground film). Personally, I think that’s just inhumane. Don’t schools know how much it impacts a person’s self-respect or self-worth when they have to make an educational poster? Like, it could impact them for LIFE. And now we’re letting an accused rapist run for president. That may just be the worst punishment of them all, allowing them to represent our nation and (don’t make me say it --) women?! Please don’t torture a person like that!

So, even though I’m an “extreme feminist” and a democrat, my reasoning for not voting Trump strands far beyond the political spectrum. Maybe it’s time to dig deeper into the rape allegations against our nation’s possible leader and focus on more than Hillary’s health since my mental health will deteriorate with a rapist as my representative. America won’t be “great again” when our leader has ended a woman’s feeling of greatness forever. So What the Trump, America?? Sarcasm aside, isn’t it time to find out a little more about this case before we can elect a possible rapist into presidency?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
