You've probably been hearing the phrase "Mercury in retrograde" lately and wondered what the heck it could possibly mean. In astrological terms, Mercury in retrograde is a period of time when the planet Mercury turns in the opposite direction, which happens several times throughout the year. In astrology, Mercury is considered to rule over the mind and communication, which is why things (supposedly) tend to get a bit crazy during periods of retrograde.

If Mercury in retrograde allows me to use even more Ryan Gosling memes than usual, please sign me up.

Since Mercury in retrograde is said to cause communication mishaps and less than ideal decision-making skills, it is typically advised that people do not make any significant decisions in these areas during this time since they may be more prone to slip ups than usual. Anything from not making big agreements (moving in with someone new, starting a new job, making big career moves at work, etc.) to avoiding traveling is recommended.

To make things even more complicated, Mercury in retrograde affects people differently based on their zodiac signs and birth charts (birth charts are detailed charts of all of a person's signs--- yes, you have more than one!). Even though Mercury in retrograde sounds like an utter annoyance, it isn't completely terrible. While it may mess with our communication for a short period of time, phases of Mercury in retrograde can be beneficial in that they can allow us to step back and think through the decisions we make on a day to day basis. In some ways, Mercury in retrograde can help us get more in touch with ourselves and save us from making bad decisions that we may have gone through with otherwise.

In case you were wondering, these are the dates that Mercury will go into retrograde in 2017:

  • January 1 to 9
  • April 9 to May 3
  • August 13 to September 5
  • December 3 to 23

Luckily, Mercury in retrograde only lasts for a couple of weeks, so you don't have to suffer through it for too long. Whether or not you genuinely believe in astrology, horoscopes, or zodiac signs, or simply just do way too much research on it in your free time because you think it's fun (like me), it doesn't hurt to keep Mercury in retrograde in mind. So go ahead, blame Mercury for all of your problems while you still can this month. At the very least you won't feel as bad about the things that you managed to mess up on your own...Thanks, Mercury!

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
