Your cheat sheet to Franklin College lingo.

What the HECK Do All These Abbreviations Mean?

Every day during your first semester, I can promise you someone will throw an abbreviated word your way during normal conversation. To them, it’s just part of life here at Franklin College, but to you it sounds about as clear as German. Here is a “cheat sheet” to different abbreviations you will most definitely hear during your first year at Franklin College, and after reading this, you will be prepared.

JCFA- Johnson Center for the Fine Arts

RA- Resident Assistants

Sections- Johnson-Dietz residence halls (upperclassmen dorms)

Saga- Cafeteria/dining hall

Atrium- Large area outside Saga with glass windows

Hamilton- Library

Zeta- Zeta Tau Alpha

Pi Phi- Phi Beta Phi

Tri Delt- Delta Delta Delta

Phi Delt- Phi Delta Theta

Sig- Sigma Alpha Epsilon

KDR- Kappa Delta Rho

Chi- Lambda Chi Alpha

Teke- Tau Kappa Epsilon

Faught- Stewart “Red” Faught Stadium (football/soccer field)

Spurlock- Gymnasium

Barnes- Science building (directly in front of Saga)

Old Main- Social science, math, computing, and foreign language building

Rec Center- Fitness Center where you can go to shoot some hoops or exercise (directly beside JCFA)

Elsey- Freshmen residence hall located across the street from Saga

Hoover/Cline- Freshman residence hall located in the middle of campus by the library

Dietz Center- Professional development center and also upperclassmen dorm facility

LA 100- Leadership seminar required of all freshmen

ODI- Office of Diversity and Inclusion

OGE- Office of Global Education (plan study abroad trips, etc.)

BSU- Black Student Union

Griz Den- Events where students gather in a “cheer block” to support their fellow Grizzlies during athletic contests. These are put together by the Student Congress. During the year, each sport will get their own “Griz Den.”

Wymer Room- The basement of the Richardson Chapel (often used for classes)

“Great Room”- The large basement of Elsey where you can chill, study, watch TV, or play some pool

Branigin room- Large presentation room where New Student Registration was held

SAC- Student Activities Center (second floor of the Napolitan Student Center/Saga)

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

Rory Gilmore

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
