What The First Year Of College Taught Me

A new experience I would not trade for anything.

What The First Year Of College Taught Me
Brandi Holmes

First time at anything is terrifying. The first year of college was not any different. Fortunately for myself, I was allowed the opportunity to move up to the city, where I would be attending school, for the summer and get used to the area while working. This was a GREAT experience to ease me into getting out of the small-town life I was so used to. Then, the time to start my first year of college rolled around and it was time to experience something that would be so new. So, if you are going to college soon, you can look forward to these things. If you just wrapped up your first year, maybe you can relate to a few of these.

College has turned me back into a preschooler when I really think about it. I waste a lot of my time. I have found myself coloring to pass time and try to relax. I CONSTANTLY crave snacks and drink loads of chocolate milk. I cry a lot if that also makes me seem like a preschooler. The thing that makes me feel most like a preschooler is always wanting to nap. Always.

One thing my first year of college has taught me is that the second semester is NOTHING like the first semester. The first semester was a breeze in my book, the second semester was most definitely not. The first semester I can actually remember going to literally EVERY class. I feared missing class and information that would be taught in class. This semester has been different, on the plus side, I have met a lot of classmates and exchanged numbers so when one of us misses class, the other can just catch them up.

Another thing this first year of college has taught me is that you will most definitely procrastinate. I will definitely admit to writing MULTIPLE papers the night they were due. I also have waited to complete homework until the day it is due.. or right before class because I totally forgot about it. Which usually ends up with me in a panic mood.

Along with procrastination, there is also developing the ability to binge watch the entire nine seasons of The Office on Netflix in just a matter of two weeks. If that is not impressive, I am not sure what could be. I could probably honestly say I binged watched about 5 different series and shows on Netflix. I can also admit to watching probably over 3,000 new youtube videos, shared over 2,500 dog or animal related facebook videos, and saved a good 400 memes to my phone.

Your first year of college will fly by. I feel like everyone says that about every year but it is still incredibly true for college. I feel like half of the months I was here, those months lasted a good 2 weeks?? When time goes by quickly you almost get sad about leaving a class (especially if it was a small class), but then you remember how excited you are to get it over with. Enjoy all of the time you are given.

My first year of college has been a blast and one I would not change for anything. One of my favorite things this year of college has done for me is give me the greatest group of friends I could ask for. College is a place where so many people from different places, cultures, and backgrounds. Most of my friends are actually from my hometown and close by towns. We spent a lot of time together. We had every meal together and called them "family dinners." These friends became friends faster than almost anyone you have met before.

You will miss home. You will miss your parents and miss all of the things you left at home. Especially your pets. I cannot begin to explain how many times I have called my parents, told them about all of the embarrassing things I have done, talked about school, and asked them to let me talk to my sweet pups. Make sure you visit throughout the year, it will make everyone happy. Always be sure to call your parents and let them know you love them.

Being a part of the "pot-luck" for housing was the best thing about college. This means I went into campus housing sharing a dorm with three other girls that I did not know. This was scary at first, you never know how well you might click with someone. Your roommates can either be your great friends or enemies. Lucky for me, I found someone who was just like me. We clicked from day one and now we do everything together. We share embarrassing stories, funny stories, secrets, weird stories, many laughs and jokes, and a strong love for dancing (and pizza). Finding a pea in a pod in college when you do not know what you are quite getting into is so reassuring.

College is a crazy, beautiful, amazing whirlwind. It is highly popularized in television and movies, but not necessarily in the most accurate way. Yes, there's frats, dingy dorms, raging house parties—but there's also a lot that people fail to mention.

1. If you thought that you knew how to study, you're wrong.

All of your classes aren't taught every day, so professors aren't on your case constantly about reading and memorizing material. Once you get back that "questionable" first exam grade, you'll kick it into high gear and figure out what works for you

Girl With Bleached Hair
Tumblr

I've been a bleach blonde for over a year now, and let me tell you, it is a lifestyle. More hair appointments, longer showers, and special shampoo. But it is totally worth it!

1. Mentally preparing yourself to convince your hair dresser that white is the way to go.

2. Or the anxiety of what could go wrong by bleaching your hair at home.

3. You could either become a ginger

4. Or a pixie

5. The face you make in the mirror when you take off your towel to unveil the perfect white strands.

6. Taking a million selfies the day you bleached it, because you know your roots will be back in literally 2 days.

7. Having to get bangs or a big chop because your hair is so damaged.

8. Having orange highlights in between touch-ups.

9. Going out for a drink afterwards to debut your updated look.

Despite the struggles, you love your platinum blonde hair! You make sure Instagram knows it, too. You don't need a filter, because the color is flawless by itself!

Finals: just thinking about them gives you anxiety. Only two weeks separate you from summer, but they're the longest of the semester. There's a familiarity to this season, now that you have had so many testing cycles under your belt. But that doesn't quell the ever present stress to pass your finals and your classes. Even better, as a package deal during these wonderful weeks, you get to wake up early to study and you get to take exams that can begin anytime from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. Now that we have established that this week is not fun, here are some super relatable moments that punctuate finals week.

I've been at this college thing for almost three and a half years, and while I thought that high school was truly the lowest point of my existence, I'm beginning to realize that it was a walk in the park. Like, I miss the days when the biggest white lie I told my parents was my made up excuse about being late for fourth period. These days, the white lies are a tad more complex, and as ashamed as I am to admit it, I've definitely told a few of these.
