It's September and that means it's football season...I think...
All I know is that colleges have football games on campus and there's the homecoming game coming up, and there's usually a lot of people prepping for that. In case you haven't already noticed, I know next to nothing about the sport. Sure, I know what a touchdown is, and I know what halftime is, but truth be told, that's about it.
I've sat through a football game at my college before and I really wasn't sure why they kept pausing the game not even every two minutes. I also knew nothing about the point system (and still know nothing). It all seems to really drag on basically. But despite this, I'm really excited for football season.
Football season for me means having the chance to show off my school spirit and pride. From school apparel to eye makeup featuring my school's colors, to nail art designed by yours truly, I love a chance to adorn myself in everything Stony Brook University. Sure, I can get my Seawolf on on any normal day, but doing it on game day is way more fun and exciting. School spirit may not always be evident on a regular basis, collectively speaking, but this is a time when you can actually see a happy sea of red and feel the energy. Believe me, I'm not a cheerer -- I don't cheer -- but it's so surprising when you realize that you've lost control and you're on your feet screaming and pumping your fists in the air.
It's also a chance for me to hang out with friends for free (and take lots of pictures of ourselves wearing red and rocking face paint). We're all busy during the week because life happens and we have a ton of homework and exams and quizzes to study for, so getting to partake in one of the most basic college activities while having a good time with friends is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.
Of course, despite all the selfies and posting about the game on social media, I'm really excited about football season because it's a chance for me to familiarize myself with something that's outside of my comfort zone. Will I not get my dream job because I didn't know advanced football terminology? Probably not. But getting into something that fellow students train hard for and showing appreciation for it is still worthwhile. I've definitely told people that I'm not a fan of football, but looking back, that's a bit unfair considering I've never actually given the game a chance.
But maybe I'll change that this season and attend as many games as I can. Scratch that. I will change that this season.
