It is that time of the year for us Christians to give up one thing for six weeks as a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial.
It is very important to us and it is actually pretty fun, I look at it like a test to see how long I can last, along with my sibling. Here are the eight things you should give up for Lent.
1. Meat
This is definitely one of the harder ones, but I will be giving it a try this year.
I find challenging yourself is a fun thing to do because if you do make it, it's an awesome thing to look back on.
2. Sweets/Junk Food
This is a very popular item to give up and, trust me, it is NOT easy. It's like giving up a part of you.
I would definitely take caution before you decide to give this up, but it will be worth it.
3. Social Networking
Think of it like a cleanse, away from all the drama and stress that social media brings on you every day.
You will come out as a different person at the end of those six weeks but in a good, happier way.
4. Alcohol
It might not make much a difference in your life, but in some peoples', it might. Doing a cleanse is only positive in the end.
It's a way to take a step back and think, do you actually need it? How much does it affect your everyday life?
It all begins with change.
5. Worry
Constant worrying is bad for your health, but most people do it anyway.
Having a spiritual reason to give it up can be helpful if you want to reduce the overall time spent fretting.
6. Complaining
It’s super easy to get in the habit of frequently complaining without thinking twice.
But abandoning complaining for 40 days can help you get in the habit of thinking positive.
7. Wasting downtime
When you're sitting at home, watching Netflix, or playing on your phone, use that time to pray instead.
Breathe. Reach out to someone around you. You’ll be amazed at the difference it can make in your day.
8. Interrupting people
You may not like to admit it, but we all do it.
Taking time to stop and listen to someone will make such a big difference. You won't even know it, but they will.
