Have you ever been scared to do something?
Anything at all?
Maybe it was texting that cute girl/guy. Maybe it was going out for a position you didn’t think you would get. Maybe it was literally taking a leap of faith and skydiving out of the clouds. Or, maybe it was when you couldn’t decide if a chapter in your life was supposed to come to an end or not.
Point is, we all get scared. We try to see into the future and determine what will be best for us and no matter what option, or path we take, something about that journey terrifies us beyond belief.
It’s called fear of the unknown, and for you science majors out there this is when we enter a state of disequilibrium.
Our body and mind literally go into a frenzy because we have no idea what’s going to happen next or what step to take and unfortunately, we are constantly in this state.
No matter how sure we are of ourselves, or how “set” we may think our future is, there will always be something that scares us.
For me, it was the idea of stepping out of my routine.
These past few weeks I have been in this state where I have felt stuck. I wasn’t going through the typical “I’m lost” stage of college where I was questioning who I was and what I believed in. But rather, I was questioning what steps I needed to take in order to become a better version of myself.
It wasn’t until one of my sorority sisters told me that no matter what happens in life, I should never lose my spark and or to stop striving for happiness.
At my school, there is an immense pressure to get involved in order to be seen as a “leader” on campus. If you’re a part of Greek life and maybe your brother or sister is more involved than someone else’s, well then, this means your organization is clearly the best around.
I always thought that in order for people to not only see me as a leader, but just to see me in general, I had to be involved in absolutely everything.
But, I learned that this didn’t make me happy.
What made (and makes) me happy is doing what I love and being around the people I care for and admire.
It’s extremely easy for me to tell you all to do what makes you happy, but sometimes logic interferes with the heart, and it leaves us questioning what to do next.
So, if you’re like me, and you feel stuck and unsure about what to do next, do what scares you.
When you have a crazy idea in your head that gives you butterflies in your stomach, then proceed with that crazy idea!
Because if something scares you, shouldn’t that be more of a reason to do it?
Step out of your comfort zone and seize your day because as cliché as it sounds, you really do only live once.
