What Is Retail Like?

A little summary into things that go on during a retail workers day.

People always ask what its like working in retail. Well I will tell you what my day consists of specifically. Well my day usually starts off with being stuck in traffic and taking forever to get to work. Thus starting off my day as flustered and irritated because I know I will have to park extremely far away. Then that means after work when its dark I will have to walk all the way to my car. Which is kind of terrifying to be honest so next time you cut me off for that close parking spot remember how I will be walking all the way across the lot at 8pm.

My day then begins spraying cards with the fragrances I sell. I love fragrance so much, and it so fulfilling to help someone find the perfect fragrance. The things that drive me crazy though is when you manage to spray the counter with perfume because then it leaves marks on the glass and looks gross. Or how you just took my card and sprayed it with another fragrance. So when you then make that face remember you are smelling my fragrance and another mixed together which isn't that great to be honest. Another thing that will make you crazy if you work retail is someone never being happy. Like I am trying so hard to make you happy, and you just tell me how you hate everything is not going to make my day any better.

Another thing to think about while shopping is you are not the only customer in the whole world. There are plenty of people who probably need help so when I tell you I need to help someone else. It does not mean I do not want to help you it means I just want to help that person who seems to already know what they. So when you then get offended when I help them remember there is not tons of workers and that person may just want to get what they need and leave and I'll be done in five minutes.

Then after a few hours I will go eat at the food court which is a challenge in itself. You end up eating only at the place with the shortest line or else you end up waiting 30 minutes for food and then hurrying to eat because you cannot be gone for too long. And then you are trying to hurry and walk back to the store and everyone is walking super slow and walking side by side and not leaving any room to pass. It will drive a person about crazy.

So to everyone shopping over Christmas remember that the average retail person especially come December works long hours and only gets short breaks. I would greatly appreciate it if next time you consider that yes you don't want to take the perfume sprayed card, but it would make me feel a lot better about my day.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
