What Really Happens When Trying To Find A Job

Oh summer... it's the time of year every student looks forward to. No classes, no homework, no waking up early just to do nothing. It's pure bliss. Unfortunately, reality sets in after a couple of weeks of not leaving your bed and only eating cereal. The reality is... you need a job.

1. The Motivation Stage

Everyone does this. You start looking up jobs and get super motivated and you start thinking about how great you're doing in life... Nothing can stop you!

2. But where to start.....?

There are a billion different websites to look for jobs, as well as newspapers and actually dragging yourself into a store, but somehow you still get stuck...

3. How long have I been looking?

What should be maybe an hour of serious looking turns into five hours of kinda-sorta looking.

4. I've been looking long enough, time for a break.

"Take a break! You've been looking enough, you'll get back to it later!" I, much like many other people, have said those words more times then we can count. We somehow find any excuse not continue.

5. Well it's late, I'll start fresh in the morning.

No one wants to fill out applications when they're sleepy. That's just silly!

6. I actually completed an application!

You did it! How wonderful. You should be proud of yourself! But really, you've been doing this for so long that you should have filled out at least 20 by now.

7. I deserve a break and a trip to Target.

You finally completed one and now the only possible thing to do is leave and reward yourself.

8. Why haven't they called me yet?

It's understandable not to hear from your possible employer for a couple of days, but when it's been a week or more....

9. Time to fill out more applications.

Now you start the whole process again and tell yourself that you'll fill out more this time because.. well, you need a job.

10. Yeah, I'd rather work any where else.

Let's be honest, there are some places that you just do not, under any circumstances, want to work at.

11. Except for that place.

You can picture yourself walking through the doors and being professional and what not!

12. I got an interview! Yes!

You are the best and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! You may have never bombed an interview, but not everyone is going to be great.

13. Do I really want to work here?

Once you're done with the interview you start thinking about going through a day at work. The other employees, the customers, what you have to clean, etc. It's very easy to talk yourself out of situations that probably won't actually happen.

14. They like me. They really like me!

I know it's very easy to doubt yourself when it comes to finding a job, but once you get it, you feel like a million bucks!

15. The realization that you now have a job that pays money.

Remember those overpriced shoes you couldn't afford a week ago? Well, now you can!

16. You're an adult now. Congratulations!

Have fun being your wonderful, adult self!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
