The year 2016 ended in a very sad way for many. We were left mourning the loss of one of the most iconic film figures since 1970; Carrie Fisher. Known best for her role in the Star Wars saga as the feisty Princess Leia, Fisher cemented herself in our memory with witty remarks and bold behavior. Did she teach us anything though? She, as Princess Leia, definitely taught us some very memorable lessons.
1. Not every damsel is in distress
Very early in Episode IV: A New Hope, we meet Princess Leia as she is being captured by Darth Vader and his evil Imperial forces. Once captured, she is held prisoner until Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca arrive to rescue her. However, Leia doesn't follow protocol. When cornered in the detention hallway by storm troopers, she grabs Han's gun and blows a hole in the side of the wall that allows an escape. While she is a damsel, she shows us time and time again throughout the movies that she is capable of freeing herself from sticky situations. This is the lesson that she teaches us. Not every girl that finds herself in a tight spot is in need of assistance. Sometimes, they may have a better grip and know what to do better than those who think they can rescue them.
2. Sometimes, we have to fight
Fighting isn't always the best course of action. However, when your back is against the wall, you might as well come out guns blazing. Leia has plenty of instances throughout the movie where she grabs a gun or a weapon and welcomes the challenges of a fight. She isn't fazed by an blaster or any Imperial force, but rather she stands firm and refuses to back down from the threat. This bravery is another lesson that the Princess gives to all of us. Fighting isn't always what is needed, but when it is called on, we all need to stand firm with heads held high. Ready for whatever may come our way.
3. You can be pretty and tough
Often, it is perceived that one can either be pretty or tough. Well, for anyone that thinks that, I would highly encourage you to watch Princess Leia and then see if such a thought is still valid. The princess is definitely not lacking in the department of looks and yet she radiates as much toughness as she does beauty. She resists a mind probe, takes a blast to the shoulder, and witnesses the destruction of her home planet by the Empire. Still, she remains loyal to the Rebellion and refuses to be broken. By doing this, she gives us all a perfect image of what it means to not be restrained to one sector. Why be pretty or tough? Why not be both!
Certainly, these are not the only things Leia teaches us throughout Episode Four through Six, but these three stand above the rest as examples of not only a character who will stand the test of time, but also a woman who played an instrumental part in redefining the role of women in the film industry.
R.I.P. Carrie Fisher. May the Force be with you.
