What Politics Has Taught Me As A 19-Year Old

We don't all see things the same way, and we never will.

What Politics Has Taught Me As A 19-Year Old
The Libertarian Republic

It has been going on three months since we elected a new President. This election was my first year voting for a candidate. Since it was my first time voting, this forced me to pay attention to the news even more than I already had been. After hearing each candidate's opinions, I cast my official vote (and no, I did not vote for the winner). In that moment, I realized how much politics and political views affect our lives; I don't always enjoy exposing my opinions on political figures, but understanding how crucial politics has become in the average American life is eye-opening.

For starters, it is human nature to all have different views on life and want to change the world in all different ways. Our nation elects one candidate every 4 years with the intention of changing our country for the better. On occasion, we will be wrong. I am not a Donald Trump supporter, nor will I ever be; how could I agree with his campaign? His whole campaign was about making America "Great" again. Meanwhile, he simply sat there and made his supporters buy into all the outlandish things he was saying and convinced them to defend him at all costs. Not to mention, he completely insulted his former election opponent Hillary Clinton, specific races, women, former President Obama, and essentially anyone that disagreed with him. Despite what his supporters think, I cannot back this kind of behavior, and I suppose that goes to show how differently we all, as individuals, see things. Former President Barack Obama made every effort to break down barriers and create an equal nation, yet people still found reasons to call him out on being the 'worst president ever.' Anything he was praised for, he also was ripped apart for. We will never all agree on the same thing; there will always be someone who is 'wrong.'

Occasionally, I wonder what our nation would be like without a president or leader in power. This could potentially help us stop fighting over which party is doing a better job, who is doing more, and who did less. One day, hopefully, we can come together as one rather than individuals. We are not going to get any better as a whole if we keep debating on who needs to be in the White House; we should be worrying who is in God’s house. As a Christian follower, I believe in the power of God, and that his love could be the answer to all of our problems.

It really upsets me having to see this at the age of 19, I am unsure what my future holds, and as a nation, we have no idea what could possibly be in store for us. Will I have to deal with this my whole life moving forward? Is our country going to forever be divided this way? People may not feel the same way I do, but growing up in the generation that I am has helped me see the world in a different light, and has also helped me realize that everyone sees things in a different light.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
