What People Who Get Migraines Want You To Know
migraine

June just so happens to be National Migraine Awareness Month. The Mayo Clinic defines migraines as "headaches that can cause intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound." If you ask anyone who gets migraines regularly, they would define them as hell. There are countless stereotypes that those who get migraines face, and here are a few things we would like you to know.

1. Having migraines can be exhausting

There will be days where the pain is so horrible that the only relief is laying in bed and trying to sleep it off.

2. Migraines and headaches are not the same things

Migraines can affect every part of your body. They can and will drain you mentally and physically.

3. My migraines are not like your sister's, or your dad's, or your second cousin twice removed's

Everyone's migraines are different in every way possible. There are different triggers, pain types, locations where the actual migraine occurs, and symptoms. No two migraines are the same.

4. We are not lazy

If I am unable to do something because of my migraine, chances are I will not be doing anything that day or even the next. There will come a time when the pain is just too much, and being active could make the pain worse.

5. I am sorry I do not look like I have a migraine

Then again, what is someone who suffers from migraines supposed to look like? After getting migraines for years it gets easier to hide the fact that you have one. Trust me, what I express versus what I am actually feeling are polar opposites.

6. Never ever suggest the sufferer "drink water." If drinking water would get rid of my migraines I would drink an ocean a day.

Chances are I have tried whatever you are about to suggest, so just stop while you are still ahead. No, really, I do not want to hear it.

7. If the lights are off, please keep them off

That not only goes for lights but the TV, radio, and anything else that makes noise or causes light. Just keep it off.

8. Never say they cannot kill me

Yeah, you are right there, but migraines can tear families apart and cause you to lose your job, fail classes, and become withdrawn. So they can still ruin your life.

9. Migraines are worse than you think

Migraines have made the top 20 list of most debilitating illnesses, so no, it is not just a simple headache.

10. I cannot control when I get a migraine

Sorry, but as much as I would like to have some control, the migraine gods decide when I get a migraine.

So basically, migraines suck. They are the least funded neurological disorder in the country, although 36 million Americans suffer from migraines. Chances are a majority of people you know suffer from them. All migraine sufferers want is your love and support

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
