Being an English major as a lot of perks. For one, you can use the skills you gain pursuing the major in any field such as law, communication and publishing to name a few. Yet, there are many misconceptions among the general population regarding this degree. Here are some of the questions and comments people ask English majors on a daily basis.
1) What are you going to do with that degree?
Actually, we can do a lot. Employers want candidates who possess good writing and communication, regardless of what the field is. So, a degree in English can help you pursue a range of career options.
2) So are you going to be a teacher?
Being a teacher is an amazing and admirable job, but I am not becoming one. Referring back to my first point, we have a lot of options in choosing our career field.
3) So, you just chose this major because you are practically undecided, right?
No. I chose this major because I am interested in literature. I chose this major because I enjoy expressing myself through writing. I didn't "settle for" this major, I pursued it because I want
4) But you will not learn anything practical.
Learning to think critically and knowing how to communicate effectively are practical and invaluable skills one needs to have in the real world.
