When I first heard of this show. I wasn't too sure about it. Why would i want to watch a show about women in prison? I decided to give it a shot and I instantly became hooked. I became extremely invested in the characters and I would love watching the characters show their personality and see what they did to land in prison. What I learned is that although these women did commit crimes. Some worse than others. They still deserve to be treated like human beings. I learned that some of those in prison really don't belong there. They should be in mental institution and getting treatment for their disorders. Lolly and Suzanne are the prime example of this. Lolly suffers from schizophrenia and when she was arrested the police thought she was telling them to shut up but in reality she was telling the voices to shut up. Suzanne has the mentality of a child and really struggles to make friends. She can have very violent outbursts which sometimes lands her in psych. Taystee is in prison simply because she was under the wing of a very manipulative drug dealer. The treatment and conditions that the prison showed was absolutely awful at times. I felt as if there was no justice. The majority of the crimes committed were nonviolent or drug related. I learned that there is a big culture divide between the blacks, hispanics and whites in prison. I learned that sometimes that junkie that you judge could be a junkie because her mother never paid attention to her and let a nanny raise her, leaving her with a hunger for a mother figure and goes for anything that will temporarily make her happy, even if its heroin. Orange is the new black taught me not to judge because everyone has a story.
