Have you ever asked yourself what your purpose is? Have you ever wondered what your calling is? What you were created to be? Don’t feel alone, most people have questioned this at least once. People change jobs, students change majors, and some of us change our lifestyle trying to figure out what we are supposed to do with our lives. Mark Twain said it best, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."
I recently attended a service through which the theme of the series was, you guessed it, purpose. The topic of the night was hearing God’s calling for us and recognizing what our potential purpose is. One of the most widely known verses of the Bible is Romans 8:28 that says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Called. Purpose. Humans were made by God and for God, to live out His purposes for each and every one of us. So let me ask you a question? Do you view God’s prompting as an interruption or an opportunity? A lot of times we don’t recognize what God is calling us to do. But God is patient with us and he waits as we begin to understand.
As I began to be more drawn into such a powerful message, there were 4 major points that the pastor really focused on.
1.] Our calling is a gift from God. We didn’t earn it. And we didn’t deserve it. The way that the pastor portrayed this key point was the gift of life. As parents, God calls on them to love their children, protect them, and lead them home. The sanctity of life is so precious. There may be accidental parents, but there will never be accidental children.
2.] Our calling is permanent. Our purpose doesn’t change. God’s gifts are irrevocable. When God calls on us to do something, it is now our duty to serve Him and praise Him for the rest of our life. Our stupid mistakes and dumb decisions don’t change what God has called us to do.
3.] Our calling is connected to others. We aren’t supposed to live out our purpose on an island by ourselves. God wants us to become a body with our brothers and sisters in Christ. He wants us to become one to worship Him together.
4.] Our calling is empowered. God gives us the strength, wisdom, and bravery we need to carry out the task he has given us.
Don’t be afraid to ask God what your calling is.
"Speak to me O Lord for I am listening. Fill me with your strength and your wisdom."
