An ode to the old Hollywood beauties...

What Old Hollywood Stars Taught Us

Yes, it is rightfully deserved that these women of Old Hollywood are crushable. I mean, let's think about it. Whenever I picture Old Hollywood, the words "timeless," "classic," and "chic" all come to mind. Back before the internet and social media or even the dreaded program Photoshop ruled the world, these women powered through the male-dominated world of Hollywood. These fearless women showed everyone that they could not, and would not, be defined by gendered and societal roles they faced at the time. They could not be tamed. The beauty and fame notions that tried to mold them instead made them more insightful. These women made sure that they were known for their personality; they were intelligent, witty, demure, sweet, eccentric, bold, and so much more. But, all while trying to make it in the film industry, these women put out pieces of wisdom that are still relevant decades later.

Audrey Hepburn

While everyone knows her as just a pretty face, Audrey was much more than that! Once she was done with the industry, she dedicated all of her hard-earned money and energy to philanthropy. She carried herself with grace and poise every step of the way as she became a UNICEF ambassador. She taught us that, yes, trends and fads come and go, but there is only one real recipe for beauty that always comes out on top.

"Elegance is the only beauty that never fades."

Lauren Bacall

This sassy, fair-haired, and witty gal never seemed to lose her charm and grace, even in her later years. Nowadays, with all of the beauty products that reverse the aging process, it is easy to feel pressure and given in to them to deny your body's reality. However, this lady has something to say about that:

"I think your whole life shows in your face, and you should be proud of that."

Marilyn Monroe

She lived a tragic but fabulous life. While she is well-known for all her love affairs, successful ones and failed ones, the gorgeous blonde bombshell has been around the block and learned quite a lot. She tried to rid her life from all of the things that did not nourish her soul, aka ...

"It's better to be unhappy and alone then unhappy with someone."

Ava Gardner

She lived one heck of a life. Weekend parties with Hemingway, a love affair with Frank Sinatra and a knack for hard liquor and bull fighting, this star lived on the fast and furious side of life. And she loved it. It can be said that she lived her life by "living in the moment." In other words, she reminds us that those late nights on the town and that 2 a.m. pizza are always worth it!

"I've certainly never taken the care of myself that I should have. On the contrary, I've done a lot of later nights without enough sleep and all that. But, I've had fun. Whatever wrinkles are there, I've enjoyed getting them."

Katharine Hepburn

Unique face, independent spirit, and eccentric personality all describe this wonder. She had a knack for doing what she pleased, even if she ruffled a few feathers in the meantime. So, in the means of figuring out yourself and doing your own thing, meet the original trailblazer.

"If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased."

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
