As human beings, we have been exposed to the idea of love for as long as most of us can remember. Think back to your mother reading you a bedtime story- the one about the prince and the princess, and how they danced all night, losing track of time because they were so infatuated with each other. Growing up, this is the only understanding of love we had.
You may have watched your dad as he wrapped his arms around your mom while she was cooking, or the way your older sister smiled at her boyfriend when he sang to her in the car, but even those moments were not enough to prepare you for the feeling you would experience when you found a love of your own. Your mom didn't tell you about the quarrel they had earlier in the day, and your sister never told you that she questioned staying with him. The truth is, there are so many things no one tells you about being in love.
No one tells you that you temporarily lose yourself.
There comes a point in every relationship when you begin to give so much of yourself to that other person, that you forget the person you are. Their happiness becomes your main priority, and that's okay, just don't forget to make yourself happy, too.
No one tells you that you begin to view life in a new light.
There will be days you find yourself dancing around your room, singing along to every song that comes on. You will speak to the people at school with more kindness than you did before because your heart becomes so full of love, it needs to be shared somehow.
No one tells you he will make you cry.
It will be intoxicating. Some nights you won't be able to breathe because he slammed the door in your face for the first time, and drove away angry. It will feel like the world is crashing down around you. Your hands will shake and your throat will go numb, but take a deep breath. If he is the one, he will always turn around to pick up the broken pieces.
No one tells you that everything he does is the cutest thing. Ever.
"The way you tie your shoes is so cute." "I love the way you say my name." "I love that you choose thick crust over thin crust." "That sneeze was the cutest thing, ever." "Oh my God, you are literally so cute."
And lastly, no one tells you the lasting impression he will have on you.
You will never forget how you felt when he grabbed your hand for the first time. You will never forget how heat surged throughout your whole body when he told you he loved you. You will never forget the sense of comfort you felt when you were eating dinner with his family for the first time and he slid his hand on top of your thigh and looked at you with a smile. Each of these moments will live on in your memory forever. He will help mold you into the best person you can possibly be, and you will do the same.
Hold onto every moment like it could be the last, and never go to bed without saying I love you.
