What I Need You To Understand

You are not defined by a label.

I'm a girl, a daughter, a sister, a student, a believer, a hopeless romantic, a mama's girl, and so much more... There are moments when people only see me as one of those things and nothing else. You look at me, and because of basic human nature and the world we live in, you are pre-disposed to certain stereotypes. You place me into a category, whether you realize it or not. It's not your fault. It's just how we are raised. We are raised to categorize everything. By shapes, colors, size, sense, gender, sex, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc... We live in a world of categories. But, what I need you to understand, is that I am not defined by these labels. I am not a category.

And I need you to understand, that neither are you.

We live in a world where, when we walk down the sidewalk, our minds unconsciously place someone into a category. We label a person and don't even know we've done it. These categories, these labels are what separate us. They are the things that insight disagreements. Then, those disagreements turn into heated disputes. Then, those heated disputes force people into choosing sides. Then, choosing sides turns into fights. Then, those fights turn into violent battles, and before anyone can stop themselves, those battles become the wars that our parents fought, which are now the wars that we fight. And unless we come together, as one people, as one united front, they will be the wars that our children, and our children's children, will fight long after we are gone. What I need you to understand is that we have the ability to make a change. Right now.

Our generation of people is the generation that brought social media to the forefront of society. We tweet, and Facebook, and pin, and gram, and "slide into the DM's," not realizing the impact we have on the next generation. Our words and our actions have a profound impact on the youth who follow our lead. Your younger brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends watch our every move, learning and growing accordingly. We are living in a generation of labels and categories. Labels and categories that our parents and the world unknowingly (and knowingly) taught us to recognize and follow. What I need you to understand, is that your words and the way you live your life, directly affect the younger generation that watches you at every turn.

So what do we do? Yes, we. We have do make something change. You can't point fingers and blame others for the way they act and the way they use their influence. We have to be united as one and make a commitment to change. Because WE HAVE TO DO BETTER. No matter who you are, girl, boy, black, white, Hispanic, gay, straight, trans, republican, democrat, Christian, atheist, tall, short, extrovert, introvert or any other label the world has placed on you. No matter who you are, you are worth it. You are not defined by any label. You are not confined to the category in which the world has placed you in. You can be whoever and whatever you want to be. You are a combination of every hope and dream and struggle and victory and moment that has passed by. So what I need you to understand is... you are you.

I need you to understand that you are not defined by anyone. Or anything.

I need you to understand...

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
