What My Name Means To Me

My name is Michael Bee, or at least that's what's on my birth certificate. Some people tend to disagree. I can be Michael, Michael Bee, Mike, MichaelBee, or a few other variations. I don't care what I'm called, honestly. My name isn't important. It's the meaning that comes behind who calls me which one that I care about most.

For my mom it's "MICHAEL" after I haven't heard her calling me for the past few minutes (although we both have phones but she can't text me). If anybody calls me Mike around her, they're in for some death glares because "that's not your name." The worst is "MichaelBee!"; the space had the right idea to run because trouble is coming.

It's not always a bad thing, though. The parents of my friends from elementary school call me MichaelBee to this day, but without the aggression my mom uses when I'm in trouble. It was the best way for my coaches to distinguish me from other Michaels, who were clearly inferior and shouldn't think they would even be allowed to be me.

My high school friends call me Mike, which my mom has just recently learned. They used to call me Michael, until my friend told his parents who was coming over, referring to me as Mike, and they asked, "Who's Mike?". For some reason, that stuck with all of us, and I've been Mike ever since.

Somehow, Mike has variations, too. All because of the Hump Day commercials, I get into an Xbox Live Party with some of them and I hear "Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike" and I laugh every time. Mikey gets thrown in there occasionally, but that's only to make me mad.

I got to college and all of a sudden I was MB. One of my best friends was named Mike and it was MK and MB for a long time. Some of the friends I made during that time don't actually know my real name, they just know MB.

For the most part, I'm MikeBee. People at work have used it since I started and my broomball team finds it rolls off the tongue when calling for the ball or yelling at me for a bad shot. I think this one is my favorite so far. The people there have made my past year amazing and although MB is a classic, MikeBee is pretty great.

Each of my different names tells me a story from every part of my life. They all mean something different and bring back good and bad memories. Everybody has different names that tell different stories. What are yours?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
