What Music Means To Me

"Where words fail, music speaks."

I remember reading in my baby book a few years back about how when I was a baby, I loved to bob along to my dad’s guitar playing. When I became old enough to walk by myself in a store, I was all over the place, dancing and singing and NEVER standing still. In middle and high school, I listened to music to get my homework done or when I got home from school because singing and dancing were my favorite things. Presently, I can honestly say that nothing has changed.

When I don’t have to read an enormous amount of pages for class, I am doing homework and listening to music. When I am walking to class, I put my earbuds in and listen graciously to whatever song will inspire me to go on with my day and try my absolute best. Sometimes it’s One Direction and sometimes it’s ACDC. With music, the possibilities are endless.

That’s what I love about music. There are so many different reasons why it’s created. You get to feel what the artist felt when they wrote that song. All the happiness or sadness they were going through. It is something that helps you express what you feel when you can’t exactly put it into words yourself. Not only does it express your true, raw feelings, it’s a dream come true. Writing, recording, producing, and releasing your music for the entire world to hear and relate to is a feeling I don’t know, but I can only imagine it to be terrifying and exciting all at the same time.

When I think about music and dreams coming true, the first group that comes to mind is One Direction. Yes, they are a boyband, and yes, they aren’t currently making music, but they made their dreams come true. They did it with the only opportunity they saw, and they are incredibly successful. I went through the crazed Directioner phase where I watched videos of them talking about what it’s like to reach this unbelievable stardom so quickly, and you can just see the amazement on their faces and how much they truly appreciate their job. They constantly express how lucky they are to share their music with the world and how grateful they are to the fans for letting that happen.

Music provides this outlet of emotion and inspiration, not just for me but for so many people who use music to express their feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about so many things. It inspires people to follow their dreams and do things even if they seem far-fetched, because it could turn into something that you’d never expect.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
