What I Learned From Movie Musicals

What I Learned From Movie Musicals

I grew up watching all sorts of movies with flashbacks of scenes that were either iconic or really stuck out to me. The ones that I always enjoyed were movie musicals. I remember one of the first movies I ever watched were Disney Animated, but then I moved onto movies with actual actors and actresses. I think most of my childhood was me dancing around my house trying to be Maria from "The Sound of Music" or Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady". I remember being so distraught because no one I knew, knew who Shirley Jones is. I learned from "Kiss Me, Kate" that it's okay to forgive those who love you, like how Lilly forgave her ex husband and eventually repaired her relationship with them. I learned from "The Sound of Music" that it's okay to be different, you may find your purpose in life that way. "The Music Man" has become my favorite, considering the fact it's uplifting and tells the story of a man who is so in love with himself, falls in love with a woman and puts his flaws behind him in order to make her happy. Some may have not watched that in the story, but it is part of the plot for Harold Hill and Marian to fall in love despite Marian's objections to him. To me that also shows how playing hard to get can work!

Funny Girl is another top choice of mine, in "Funny Girl", it's a time where a woman wasn't known to be comedic. Fanny Brice taught me how it's okay to be myself, and some may not like me, but they don't matter and those who do like how I am become the most important in my life. Movie Musicals tell stories in a way regular movies may not. I have heard people I know say time after time that no one breaks into song and dance to express an opinion or state a fact. That's the point of them though! It gives the illusion of being passionate, it's meant to be fiction! Musicals were made by creative people for creative people. The more we pass around or invent creativity, new ideas come about and are born! They show powerful symbols of love, acceptance, feminism, and relations between two opposing sides. These are all problems we face every day and have at some point in our lives. Some find musicals boring, but that goes to show this type of entertainment isn't for them. They may find their comfort in a romantic comedy or a netflix series that speaks to them. That's what they choose though, for me, movie musicals or musicals in general have been my inspiration for my time growing up. They may not be as popular as they were almost a hundred years ago when they first started, but they are still definitely worth celebrating.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
